C. Williams, ELAC; Lynn Winter Gross, ESC; Darroch Young, ESC Trustee Scott­Hayes called the meeting to order at 11:10 a.m. PUBLIC SPEAKERS None. REPORTS/RECOMMENDATIONS Student Success Initiative Update Mr. Gary Colombo distributed copies of a document entitled “LACCD Student Success Workshop II.” He indicated that the topic of this workshop, which was held on May 5, 2006 at LAVC, was “Changing Colleges for Changing Students.” He summarized the workshop sessions and indicated that he will send each college a synopsis of principles and practices for student success. He extended an invitation to attend a meeting of the Student Success Initiative Steering Committee on Friday, May 19, 2006 at the Educational Services Center. Dr. Linda Hagedorn, Director, TRUCCS Research Center, will participate in discussions at this meeting. Districtwide Assessment Procedures Mr. John Clerx distributed copies of a document entitled “Assessment and Prerequisite Regulations and Policies.” He summarized the document with respect to matriculation regulations and policies for prerequisites, corequisites, and advisories as outlined in Title 5. Dr. William Duxler distributed copies of a series of documents regarding the Assessment and Placement Management System (APMS). He discussed the APMS testing process with respect to English and Mathematics placement criteria. Mr. Colombo distributed copies of a document entitled “District Assessment Overview.” He summarized the document with respect to English assessment, English­as­a­Second Language assessment, Mathematics assessment, and total estimated placement costs for each college. Trustee Scott­Hayes requested that for the future, a matrix be developed showing a breakdown of the placement costs for each college.

Mr. Colombo indicated that he would develop this matrix. There was discussion regarding the District assessment overview with respect to the assessment instruments and multiple measures used. Mr. Clerx distributed copies of a Chancellor’s Directive dated April 12, 2005 entitled “Pilot English and Math Prerequisite Project.” He summarized the document as it relates to a pilot program that the LACCD entered into with the California State University (CSU) system in which students who have been placed in college­level English and/or college­level Mathematics will be deemed to have challenged and met the prerequisites for LACCD first­semester college­level English courses and/or college­level Mathematics courses. There was discussion regarding the pilot project with respect to collecting data on the success of the students who participate in the project, assessing the data, and developing recommendations for the future based on the data. Mr. George Prather distributed copies of a document consisting of data for the nine colleges for Students Assessed in English or ESL; Students Assessed in Math; and Assessed Students by Level Placed, Fall 2004 and Fall 2005. He summarized the data with respect to first­time students, new transfers, students who dropped all units before the census, and students enrolled in noncredit classes only. There was discussion regarding the data with respect to Assessed Students by Level Placed, Fall 2004 and Fall 2005. Trustee Scott­Hayes emphasized the importance of promoting student success by providing the assistance needed to enable students to achieve passing grades. New Business None.
