Salary Determination for New Employees Based on Experience
1.
Policy. It is possible for a new employee to be placed on the salary schedule at higher than the first step if proper evidence is
presented that he/she has had certain paid experience. The type of experience for which salary credit is allowed depends on the
type of assignment of the new employee. (Board Rule 10516, 10517, 3205*)
Credit for experience as a faculty member in an accredited college or university or as a certificated employee in a public or
private school shall be granted on the basis of one year of experience for each step on the salary schedule.
No more than one year of credit may be granted for experience acquired in any one calendar year.
Experience as an evening instructor or teacher in special day and evening classes for adults shall be computed on the basis of
four hours of classroom teaching as the equivalent of one day. No such credit shall be given for evening experience on any date
for which full-time day experience is granted.

Experience as a certificated employee in a public school.
Experience after receipt of bachelor’s degree as a teacher, librarian, registrar, counselor, supervisor, or administrator in an
approved private elementary or secondary school.
Experience as an instructor, librarian, registrar, counselor, supervisor, or administrator in an approved public or private
college or university.
Experience after receipt of bachelor’s degree as a professional librarian in an approved public or private library.
Experience after receipt of bachelor’s degree as a professional psychologist or social worker in an approved public or private
agency.
Experience after receipt of bachelor’s degree as a public health nurse in an approved public or private agency.
Experience in a recognized occupational area. Such service must be directly related to the assigned instructional field and is
restricted to the subject fields designated. Credit can be granted only for experience which occurred after the completion of
an approved four-year learning period. Such learning period may consistent of occupational experience or collegiate level
preparation which occurred first or a combination thereof. See Personnel Guide B358a for authorized subjects. Paid
experience in other subject fields of instruction my be granted on a case-by-case basis upon approval by the Vice Chancellor
of Operations.
Active military service from December 8, 1941 through December 31, 1946 and after June 27, 1950.
3. Limitations. Except as expressly allowed in Rules 10516 and 10517, credit will not be allowed for experience gained prior to
completion of minimum preparation requirements (Rule 3205*) or for service performed prior to completing certification
requirements.

Employees must claim credit on the proper form, and must submit original or photostatic documents verifying dates and
types of service.
Documents submitted become the property of the Board of Trustees and cannot be returned.
Contracts without verification of fulfillment and time actually served are not acceptable.
For credit to be retroactive to the first date of the assignment , claims must be filed within two calendar months of either the
effective date of the assignment or the date the assignment order was typed, whichever is later.
5. Verification

Teaching experience must be verified on either an original letter or photocopy of the original as follows:

On letterhead stationery of the school or district.
Signed by the official in charge.
State the term of full-time employment in school years, school months, or days.
If adult or evening school teaching, verification must be in hours served per school year.
If employment was not full-time, the exact fractional part of a full-time assignment must be given for each year of
service.
Military experience must be verified by a photocopy of the official discharge. This document must show:
(1) Date of entry into active service.
(2) Date of discharge from active service.
(3) Evidence of honorable discharge or satisfactory service.

6. Salary. Employees granted credit for approved experience are placed on the salary schedule as indicated in PG B320,
SCHEDULE--Monthly Rate Employees.

Occupational Experience Salary Credit Policy
1. Policy. Occupational experience directly related to the assigned instructional field may qualify for salary credit for
allocation to a preparation salary scheduled. Such credit is restricted to subjects designated by the Chancellor. (Board
Rule 10516)
