Keynote Speaker Mr. Rodney N. Ellis, Sr. Innovative, Committed, and Inspired: 175 Years of Public Education in NC Professional Learning Day Mr. Rodney Ellis, Sr. is a native of Mocksville, NC. He is a 1999 graduate of Winston-Salem State University where he earned his B.S. Degree in Middle Grades Education. As a student at WSSU, Ellis served as president of the WSSU chapter of the Student North Carolina Association of Educators. He began teaching in 1999 for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System as an 8th Grade Language Arts Teacher at Atkins Academic Academy. As a teacher at Atkins, he earned Teacher of the Year honors for 2000-2001. In 2002, he was recognized for his commitment to education and community as a recipient of the 2002 Black Achievers Award, and the 2002 Phi Beta Sigma Man of the Year Award. In 2003, Ellis was elected president of the Forsyth County Association of Educators where he served two successful terms. In March of 2008, Ellis was elected NCAE Vice-President. In October of 2010, Ellis was recognized by his Alma Mater as the recipient of the Alumni Achiever Award for the School of Education and Human Performance. In January of 2014, Ellis was presented with the Phi Beta Sigma Centennial Legacy Award for outstanding work in the field of education. After two terms as Vice-President of the North Carolina Association of Educators, Ellis was elected NCAE President in 2012.
