Research in Progress
"The Calculation of Torque Generated by a Swimmers Arm during the Free-Style
Swim Stroke" (Writing Results): Calculating the forces generated by the arm
of a swimmer has baffled scientists, fluid physicists, and swimmers for years.
Many models indirectly calculate the forces of lift (FL) and drag (FD). These
models use computer fluid dynamic (CFD) models and Bernoulli’s equation is
the benchmark for these estimates and calculations. This study lays the
foundation to calculate FL in a more direct fashion. The protocol for this
research tested 10 individual elite swimmers, 5 male and 5 female. Each
swimmer was tethered to a dynamometer with 15 yards of non-elastic rope
around their feet. While tethered, each swimmer performed the freestyle onearm catch up drill. This allowed for the forces generated by each individual to
be measured and video recorded. Each swimmer performed this protocol for
two minutes. The measurements for each swimmer were compared to each
other for statistical relevance. The results of this test will be used as the
benchmark for further research on how to directly calculate the swimmers
torque.
