Visitors
General
Jennifer Wallin of St. Peter's School, Guildford
visited the Plasma Physics group for 4 weeks on a
Nuffield Bursary. She worked with Andrew Walsh
on Cluster Observations of Flow Braking in the
Magnetotail and produced an excellent report at
the end of her placement.
We are pleased to welcome Keith Grimstone and
Adrian White (Workshop), Simon Jackson
(Systems Engineering), Dr Stefano Pasetto
(Astrophysics) as well as seven new PhD students.
They are Gemma Cauchi (Climate Extremes), Matt
Hills (Cryogenics), Jason Hunt (Astrophysics),
Jamie Jasinski (Planetary Science), Kirthika
Mohan Narasimhan (Plasma Physics), Ailsa Prise
(Solar Physics) Tom Pollard (with Louise Harra
and Kevin Fong at UCLH).
Summer students Christopher Suberlak, Grace
Cox and Hugh Osborn worked in the Planetary
Science group.
Mission Status and Developments
The 2011 MSSL Croquet Tournament was fiercely
fought and much enjoyed. Congratulations to
Climates Extremes (Mark Saunders, Adam Lea
and Alan Muir) for winning the tournament. They
beat the Technology Management Group (Michael
Emes, Ady James, Phil WIlliams and Matt
Wyndham) 14-4 in just under an hour.
Cassini - Cassini is in its extended („solstice‟)
mission. CAPS analysis was presented in many
papers and at meetings (see lists).
Cluster – MSSL celebrated 10 years of the Cluster
mission on 22 June. The event was attended by
Dr. Matt Taylor (Cluster project scientist, ESA) who
-1-
gave a presentation.
Arridge, C.S., N. Achilleos, P. Guio, Electric field
variability and classifications of Titan’s
magnetoplasma environment, AnGeo
Communicates, 29, 1253-1258,
doi:10.5194/angeo-29-1253-2011, published 19
July 2011. http://www.anngeophys.net/29/1253/2011/angeo-29-12532011.html. This paper shows that the electric
field imposed on Saturn's moon Titan from
Saturn's magnetosphere can be highly variable.
We demonstrate that this variability is not
captured by classifications of Titan's plasma
environment.

Cluster continues to investigate the auroral
acceleration regions. Andrew Fazakerley has been
helping to plan burst mode operations for the highaltitude AAR campaigns.
EJSM-Juice – Several SST meetings and telecons
during the summer. The mission „yellow book‟ will
be written by November, with downselect in
February 2012.
ESR-2 – retired on 6 July after a fantastic 16 years
of operational service. Having far exceeded its
original design lifespan of 3 years, the ERS-2 has
provided a valuable link allowing cross-calibration
of missions from ERS-1 through to the CryoSat
era. See:

ExoMars – PanCam activity continuing, including
work on DC-DC converter. Andrew Coates
presented at AOGS, CEL was involved in several
outreach activities.
NIRSpec CLS Update - The NIRSpec CLS,
delivered to Germany last year, is scheduled to be
used for the FM NIRSpec calibration between
October and December this year.
Solar Orbiter - Chris Owen attended the kick-off
meeting for the Solar Orbiter spacecraft System
Requirements Review on 7 June. Review activities
continued for ~7 weeks, and the final presentation
was attended by Chris Brockley-Blatt, on behalf of
the SWA team, on July 26. In addition, there was
a full SWA team meeting held in a convent in Citta'
Della Pieve, Italy, on 7/8 July. A mini-Team
meeting was also held at MSSL on 30 August, in
preparation for a Technical Interface Meeting
between the SWA Team, ESA and Astrium UK,
which was also held at MSSL the following day.
Otherwise the SWA team are fully engaged in
progressing the design and development of the
SWA suite in general, and the EAS sensor in
particular, in preparation of the instrument PDR at
the end of the year.
Venus Express and Mars Express – Vex and
MEx are in extended missions. Andrew Coates
attended the ASPERA meeting in Kiruna, 6-8 June.
