The scientific and technical staff makes up a large percentage of our work force, but other functions—including budget administration, regulatory affairs, security, biosurety, personnel and administrative support, logistics, maintenance, and resource management—are performed as well. The U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Detrick http://www.detrick.army.mil/aeop/index.cfm USAG commands, operates and administers resources providing quality installation support and services to DOD and non-DOD partners, meeting current and future mission requirements in biomedical defense research and development, medical materiel management, and global telecommunications. The USAG supports five cabinet-level agencies: The DOD, Department of Veterans Affairs, USDA, DHS, and Department of Health and Human Services. Within the DOD, Fort Detrick supports elements of all four military services. Major Department of the Army mission partners includes the USAMRMC and the 21st Signal Brigade. 21st Signal Brigade Headquartered at Fort Detrick, is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command/9th Army Signal Command. The 21st Signal Brigade’s mission is to provide command, control, communications, and computer system support to the President, Secretary of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, DOD, Combatant Commanders and other Federal Agencies; to establish, operate, protect, and sustain the Army’s CONUS (Continental United States) strategic portion of the Global Information Grid; and to protect and provide for the well-being of our people. Being a scientific research agency, many of the careers available are in the life, physical, and engineering sciences. ARS employs research scientists, postdoctoral research associates, support scientists and research technicians, as well as positions in various professional, technical, administrative, secretarial and clerical, and trades and craft. National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures NBACC has a challenging mission Providing the nation with the scientific basis for awareness of biological threats and bioforensic analysis to support attribution of their use against the American public NBACC addresses its mission through three applied science-to-operations programs National Bioforensics Analysis Center (NBFAC) National Biological Threat Characterization Center (NBTCC) Coordination of Outreach, Reach back, and Evaluation (CORE) Department of Homeland Security http://jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov/dhscareers/ All Homeland Security jobs require U.S. citizenship and most require successful completion of a full background investigation. In addition, applicants may be required to submit to a drug test. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) realizes that the country’s strong science and technology community provides a critical advantage in the development and implementation of counter-terrorist measures and other DHS objectives. Working with states and other partners, CDC provides a system of health surveillance to monitor and prevent disease outbreaks (including bioterrorism), implement disease prevention strategies, and maintain national health statistics. CDC also guards against international disease transmission, with personnel stationed in more than 25 foreign countries. The NCI is also strongly committed to training future cancer researchers and offers numerous post-doctoral and pre-doctoral fellowship positions. The NIAID Integrated Research Facility at Fort Detrick The NIAID IRF The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is building a new biocontainment laboratory, the Integrated Research Facility (IRF), at Fort Detrick. The IRF will be one component of a National Interagency Biodefense Campus (NIBC). The new facility will be used both by scientists working full time at NIH (intramural research) and by scientists at universities (extramural research). BSL-4 research in the IRF Research in the IRF will be carried out under Biosafety Level-4 containment, in which investigators will wear positive-pressure suits (“space suits”). Studies will involve the infection of laboratory animals with hazardous agents as models of human disease, in order to study the course of illness and develop new vaccines and therapies. Research will focus principally on the most virulent pathogens, such as Ebola and Marburg virus, but other microbial agents can also be studied. The IRF: what is our “niche”? The IRF will focus on using nonhuman primate models to study and treat emerging infections and diseases of biodefense concern, with extensive monitoring and intervention. The IRF will be the only high-containment facility in the world capable of performing whole-body imaging of infected animals under BSL-4 conditions.
