STAFF SENATE MINUTES Wednesday April 1st, 2015 LOCATION: Azalea B 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Meeting / 4:00-5:00 Committee Meetings, if needed Call to Order Approval of minutes from March meeting—DID NOT HAVE A QUORUM. Must approve at next meeting. Reading of Conflict of Interest Statement by Dawn Brown. “As Parliamentarian of the UNCW Staff Senate, it is my responsibility to remind all members of the Senate of their duty under UNCW Staff Senate conflicts of interest policy to avoid conflicts of interest and appearances of conflict of interest as required by this policy. Each member has received the agenda and related information for this Senate meeting. If any delegate knows of any conflict of interest or appearance of conflict with respect to any matter coming before the UNCW Staff Senate at this meeting, the conflict or appearance of conflict should be identified at this time.” GUEST SPEAKER: Mark Lanier, Assistant to the Chancellor/Board of Trustees Summary of Board of Governor’s budget request for this fiscal year and policy agenda: House is working on budget right now and should be finished in May. She also mentioned her meeting with HR’s new Vice Chancellor, Rosalyn Martin. TREASURER’S REPORT No activity HUMAN RESOURCES REPORT –Lori Preiss was unavailable COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS Public Relations-Food Drive results: 1664 pounds of food donated for NC Food bank Orientation: Melissa Cox volunteered for next week’s new employee orientation Advancement: raised $190k last week. Elections: Nominations open in April. Election must be held no later than May 15th 1. Update on the number of seats and seats open for election in upcoming term. We have 11 open seats for the upcoming term. 2. Possible solutions for unusual amount of open seats. Should we extend current terms for one year? 3 volunteers-Melissa, Daniella, and Linda. With 6 Senators continuing on for another year of their term and 3 senators agreeing to stay an additional year and with the election of 10, the rotation of Senators exiting at the end of their term will be closer to even every year. 3. Discussion: Should EPA Non-Faculty employees be represented in Staff Senate? EPA nonfaculty are eligible for representation per our by-laws. It was decided that we need to investigate who actually represents this group. 4. Should we move New Senator Orientation to an hour or so before the first senate meeting following elections? YES, but not the first meeting following elections. It will be one hour before the July meeting which is the new Senator’s first meeting instead of holding it in June. Scholarship It has been in Swoop. Applications are open until 4/17. Review 4/23. We will vote in May. Staff Priorities-information on upcoming forums: 3 dates 4/12 8:30-9:30; 4/22 12:30-1:30; 4/29 10:00-11:00 NEW BUSINESS Changing date and/or time for Staff Senate Meetings starting in new term (July) We discussed changing from the 1st Wednesday of the month to 2nd Wednesday of the month. Majority of those present agreed to the change. Email will go out to entire Senate to get feedback and the executive committee will review the feedback and make the decision. ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM DEPARTMENTS Commencement is May 8th and 9th. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED (4 shifts). Staff gets comp time for volunteering on Saturday and lunch if volunteering for full day.
