Reading of Conflict of Interest Statement by Dawn Brown
“As Parliamentarian of the UNCW Staff Senate, it is my responsibility to remind all members of the Senate of their duty
under UNCW Staff Senate conflicts of interest policy to avoid conflicts of interest and appearances of conflict of interest as
required by this policy. Each member has received the agenda and related information for this Senate meeting. If any
delegate knows of any conflict of interest or appearance of conflict with respect to any matter coming before the UNCW
Staff Senate at this meeting, the conflict or appearance of conflict should be identified at this time.”
TREASURER’S REPORT
HUMAN RESOURCES REPORT




Recent adverse weather closure went well. UNCW policy will be shared campus wide as soon as it is
ready (within 2 weeks. A few complaints about late notice came into HR. Questions and discussion of
the closure call followed.
Onboarding center update: Projection is 60 days from hiring the Onboarding specialists to opening
center. All I-9’s will go through the center. EPA and SPA will go through the center now but eventually
faculty and maybe student employees in the future.
HR is now using an updated version of PeopleAdmin so all job openings are transitioning to the newest
version. Suggestion to go into the old system and print/save old applications so you will have a record to
use if you ever apply for a new job in the new system. For more information, look at the HR website
and/or ask your Human Resource liaison in your area.
Terry asked a question regarding background check because Staff Senate received an email from a staff
member through the suggestion box on the Staff Senate website. Lori explained the process.
NEW BUSINESS


“Points of Pride” Student Government would like to recognize excellent staff interaction resulting in
student success. If you would like to nominate a staff member, contact student government or send an
email to Terry to forward to Toby.
Discussion on how to use our website to recognize staff (similar to NC State’s “Shout Out to Staff”).
Tara Romanella suggested we use “We are UNCW” from SWOOP. One suggestion is to also recognize
the retiring staff on our website and/or SWOOP.
COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS




Food Drive-the food will be picked up today. There were numerous calls from staff who mistakenly
thought the food would be picked up instead of being dropped off at the bookstore by the department.
Katie will not head the food drive next year so she will put all her documents on SharePoint for the next
chair.
Elections-Kevin Farver will pull numbers to see where we need positions. He will contact Terry with
information and suggestions.
Scholarship is set up and the application information will be put into SWOOP. Deadline is 4/15. Winner
of scholarship will come to June meeting.
Staff priorities committee discussed using open forums to survey staff’s priorities and what is going well
and what is needed. Lorie made a suggestion to use open forums in conjunction with a survey to
maximize participation and scope.
OLD BUSINESS

Discussion of Staff engagement committee’s purpose, chair, and schedule. Terry suggested we need to
define what “staff engagement” is and what we want to accomplish. Dawn suggested keeping “staff
engagement” as an ad hoc and use it as we plan events. Much discussion followed and many agreed we
should plan to support events on campus as a group instead of creating new events.
**Suggestion to add Staff Engagement to Agenda as a permanent item to discuss upcoming
opportunities to “engage” staff. Suggestion was well received and will be considered at the next
executive committee meeting.
FACULTY SENATE REPORT


Anne Branigin was absent but Terry read the report she emailed us.
The letter from Lugo can be supported individually and you can sign it on the link the email included
should you choose to.
STAFF ASSEMBLY REPORT


Terry read an email from Staff Assembly president with UNC policies that may be of interests to staff.
Contact Terry if you would like a copy of it.
Staff Assembly and Faculty Senate may create a joint committee on Faculty-Staff Partnerships which
would have members from both groups and will get together every few months to discuss common
issues.
ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM DEPARTMENTS

Chief Information Officer will be filled after Provost and Chancellor are in place.

Searches for Deans of Cameron and Watson are holding until after Chancellor is hired.
