Building on that tradition, the Award for Distinction in Community Engaged Teaching and Scholarship acknowledges outstanding and sustained effort in undertaking research, teaching, and artistic work that is meaningful and responsive to community interests and needs. The University of Saskatchewan celebrates successful partnerships that result in measurable communityrecognized social or economic benefit (University of Saskatchewan, Foundational Document on Outreach and Engagement: Linking with Communities for Discovery and Learning, 2006). PURPOSE: The Award for Community Engaged Teaching and Scholarship recognizes University of Saskatchewan faculty, teaching, or research staff who have contributed greatly, and with distinction, to the achievement of the university’s engagement mission. It is designed to draw attention to the value of forging and sustaining community partnerships as a means of conducting important research and delivering valuable teaching opportunities. DEFINITIONS: For the purpose of this award, the definitions of “community” and “engagement” are intentionally left open. It is understood that an award nominee will have defined these things in a meaningful way, understood and accepted by community partners and academic peers, and suiting the context of the nominee’s disciplinary and intellectual traditions. Nominators may find it helpful to refer to the Carnegie Foundation definition of Community Engagement, used by the University of Saskatchewan in the Foundational Document: Community Engagement describes the collaboration between higher education institutions and their larger communities (local, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. (Carnegie Foundation, October, 2007; emphasis added). ELIGIBILITY: All currently employed faculty, teaching, or research staff of the University of Saskatchewan. NOMINATIONS: Anyone from the university academic community (deans, directors, heads, faculty, instructional and research staff, students, alumni), or a community member may forward nominations. Nominations will be held for a two-year period, with non-recipients considered the following year. THE AWARD: Recipients will be introduced at either Spring or Fall Convocation, receive an inscribed memento, and will be featured on the university website. CRITERIA: The adjudication committee will be guided by the following criteria: Meaningfulness of the partnership to community: Evidence that community participated in planning, implementing, and evaluating the activity. The activity addressed a community-identified issue or need in a way appreciated by community. Meaningfulness of the partnership to scholarship: Evidence of exemplary, innovative, and rigourous research, teaching, or artistic work. Evidence of co-generation of knowledge by community and the scholar. Meaningfulness to the University of Saskatchewan’s reputation: Evidence the activity strengthened collaboration with external scholars and organizations. Evidence the activity enhanced existing partnerships so as to position the university to be a leader in community engaged scholarship. Candidates for this award will have demonstrated an exceptional and sustained commitment to use their expertise and resources in ways that engage the public and enhance the University of Saskatchewan’s reputation locally, nationally, or internationally, with substantive impact and long-term significance for the larger community. SELECTION COMMITTEE: The Director of Community Engagement or designate (as Chair), the Chancellor or designate, two members of the Senate Roundtable on Outreach and Engagement, and two past recipients of the award. NOMINATION DEADLINE: March 15 (or the closest following business day) AWARD FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGED TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP 2.
