The Alternating Tread Stair
When walking down or up a conventional stair, each foot generally uses only half of each tread,
stepping out and over the unused portion (shaded red).
On a steeper stair or ladder, the unused half tread becomes an obstacle as it significantly reduces
the usable tread depth of the immediate next tread. As the angle increases, the problem worsens.
ALTERNATING TREAD
STAIR
In contrast, the Lapeyre Alternating Tread Stair removes the unused half of each tread, allowing
the foot to reach the next tread in a straight, direct line, providing more usable tread depth.
Imagine walking down (or up) a
conventional stair. Each foot normally
uses only about half of each tread,
stepping out and over the unused
section (shaded red).
Conventional Stair
On a steeper stair or ladder, the
unused half tread becomes an
obstacle, significantly reducing the
usable tread depth of the tread directly
below. As the angle increases, the
problem worsens.
Steep Stair
In contrast, the Lapeyre stair removes
the unused half of each tread, allowing
the foot to reach the next tread in a
straight, direct line, providing more

the stair. Custom width requests may be accommodated.
Assembly
Stairs ship as kits for easy field installation. All assembly hardware is provided.
Back-pan
Optional. Most open-riser stairs are equipped with cross bracing connecting the two

Platform Systems
Lapeyre Stair offers a variety of platforms, metal stairs, legs, and supports designed
to work together. Platform design varies depending upon the stair application, the
size, or material requirements. Once Lapeyre Stair designers receive your requirement
specifications, they create a CAD model and provide layout drawings included in the cost
of the stair.
Formed Single Piece Platforms
Used for Alternating Tread and Model 01AA / 02AA stairs for industrial applications.
Cannot be used with Models 03AA / 04AA.
Drop-in Panel Platforms
LANDINGS AND
PLATFORMS
Designed to be used with commercial stairs, this platform design may be used with most
of the stair designs. This allows for greater flexibility of size and layout configurations.

Formed Platform Systems
Compatible with the Alternating Tread Stair and the Model 01AA/02AA stairs, this
platform is a single piece of metal, cut and formed to create the walking surface, the kick
plates, and the mounting plates for the stairs. Handrails bolt from underneath the plate.
This platform is ideal for crossover systems, intermediate landings, exit landings, and
equipment access platforms.

PLATFORMS
Compatible with all of our bolted stairs and alternating tread stairs, this platform design
can best be described in a single word as flexible. It is ideal for commercial egress stair
applications, but just as well suited for the industrial stair and steel alternating tread stair.
Without the size limitations of the single formed platforms, this is the model our designers
go to when designing many of the more complicated stair systems. The drop-in panel
platform is the only platform that will work with our Model 03AA and 04AA stair models.

Design Features
•Z-channel framing, utilizing the same design as the stringers on our Model 01AA
– 04AA stairs. The balusters of the guardrail slide through the frame and attach
using provided spacers and bolts just as they do on the stairs.
•There are very few size limitations. The modular design and drop-in sections allow
for much larger platforms than our single piece formed platforms.
•Panels can drop in either parallel or perpendicular with the framing, and attach to
3" C-Channel supports.
•Continuous handrails from stair to platform are available.
•Available with either balustered or filler panel guardrails.
*Note on using this platform design for Crossover Systems
The framing on this platform is 8" high, the stair mounts to the top of the 8". Therefore,
in calculating the stair height for a crossover, you will need to add 8" to provide the
clearance you will need under the crossover system.

Design Features
Legs are constructed out of either 3" or 4" square tubing, depending on the strength
requirements of your stair height and platform size. Most units are designed for four legs,
but our engineers will review conditions where fewer or more legs are required. For
taller applications, bracing is added to the legs for additional strength, with the need for
this determined both by our computer system and our design team.
Connections
The legs typically connect at the ³⁄8" thick base plate at the bottom using 4 bolts, and at the
top ¼" base plate to the under side of the platform using 3 bolts. For multi-level stair systems
and towers, the legs can run on the outside of the platform and attach from the side.

Bracing Kit for Crossover Systems
Lapeyre Stair has always recommended sway bracing to maximize the stability of our
Crossover Systems. Designed for Crossover Systems with stairs up to 8' tall and platforms
up to 8' long, our convenient Crossover Bracing Kit includes:
Brackets: Stainless Steel upper and lower connections, plus hardware
Custom Brace Tubing: Available in carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Tubing
length will vary according to your Crossover configuration.
Critical Dimensions
Once fabricated, the bracing only allows for approximately 1" of adjustment during
installation to account for minor inaccuracies in floor anchor drilling. To determine the
correct brace specifications for your Crossover System, the following information is
required when you place your order.
•
Basic dimensions of obstacles under and near the Crossover System.
•
Optimal Spread Angle: Spread angle range is 0 to 20 degrees for 56-degree
angle stairs and 0 to 10 degrees for 68 degree angle stairs.
•
Optimal Brace Angle: Brace angle range is 20 to 30 degrees (from vertical
plane) for all configurations.
LANDINGS AND
PLATFORMS
Our customer service representatives can help you determine your optimal brace and
spread angles based on Crossover stair height, platform length, and obstacle dimensions.

**To reduce vibration, stairs in excess of 15' (4.57 m) may require customer supplied sway bracing. For vertical heights in excess of 15' (4.57 m),
Lapeyre Stair, Inc. recommends an intermediate platform with two stairs of equal height. (Customer supplied bracing required.)

Building Code Policy
As Lapeyre Stair expands its product line to provide you with more options to meet
your access requirements, we are striving to incorporate into our engineering design
the flexibility and interchangeability of components needed to selectively meet the
requirements of the various laws, standards, and building codes in operation in all parts
of the world.
We also strive to provide you with real value in your access device purchase. To achieve
that goal, we will endeavor to provide you with design alternatives that meet your local
requirements. Because of the infinite complexity of knowledge required to understand
the diverse requirements of all local political and geographic regions, we have decided
to offer products that, in general, can be selectively configured to meet the requirements
of several of the primary United States, and international laws, standards, and building
codes as described in their current or most recently issued editions.
And although we cannot guarantee that a particular stair configuration will be accepted
by your local authorities, we stand at the ready to quickly provide you with detailed
drawings of our access devices, prior to your purchase, that you may submit for
compliance approval.
Your local architect, local building code officials, and your local codes are your best
source of compliance specifications/recommendations at your location.
All capacity ratings for Lapeyre Stair conventional tread stairs are stated in terms of the
live load capacity of the stair system with a given safety factor. Local wind, snow, and
seismic rating requirements are not included in this capacity rating. Local requirements
for these loadings, where applicable, must be considered by your local architectural or
engineering professional.
