UNIVERSITY STUDIES Agenda Friday 10 February 2012 1:00-2:30p.m. Education Building, room 229 ANNOUNCEMENTS: Sharepoint tidy-up NEW BUSINESS: DONE 1. Discuss upcoming CTE workshop on populating clusters (7 Feb, 12:30 in CTE conf. room): Who from the committee will attend/present? What materials will we provide/present (we can always post powerpoints on our website)? Lea's already posted the course inclusion proposal forms, which should be submitted with the usual cover form (all here: http://www.uncw.edu/universitystudies/faculty.html). Proposal due date: 12 March. PHIL COULD LEAD THIS DISCUSSION. SENT TO UCC FOR APPROVAL 2. Review and vote upon, if we can, the registrar's and other forms that I've drafted. I've placed these forms in a new file on our sharepoint site (NEW Registrar's and Other Forms, click here: https://share.uncw.edu/teams/home/fs/usac/Shared%20Documents1/Forms/AllItems.aspx). Here's a list of these forms: • revised sub/waiver form now includes US components; still looks a good deal like the old form • new supplemental sub/waiver form is strictly for IL and WI, two components that are 'outside' of specific disciplines. These forms would come directly to our committee rather than through the chairs or deans. • revised CAF now includes US; still looks a good deal like the old form • student Cluster declaration form (we've already seen this; I just want to be sure we're ready to send it to the registrar) • DIS for EBC form has SLOs directly incorporated; faculty and students will have the option to do their DIS as EBC or not • internship for EBC form: same as above INFORMED DEAN TEITELBAUM THAT WE WELCOME A FORMAL MOTION FROM WSE 3. Discuss WSE's comments/feedback, esp. re: clusters. CURRY COULD LEAD THIS DISCUSSION. As a side note: Gabriel Lugo has the sense that all curricular change motions should come to our committee rather than first through the Senate. So, depending on what Curry conveys, we may want to encourage WSE to bring a motion before us. INFORMED ITS OF OUR CONT. INTEREST IN PILOTING EPORTFOLIOS FOR OIP, NSE, AND, IF THEY CHOOSE, HONORS; SENT REQUEST TO GABRIEL TO CHARGE FS IT COMMITTEE WITH THE TASK OF INVESTIGATING FURTHER EPORTFOLIO AND LONG TERM STORAGE ALTERNATIVES 4. Discuss eportfolio potential for EBC. MICHAEL AND LINDA COULD LEAD THIS DISCUSSION. ITS is working on making eportfolios work, at least as repositories for EBC artifacts. Linda and Michael are aware of the details. The committee needs to consider how satisfied we are with these eportfolios limited functionality. Shall we greenlight ITS on this 'pilot' for OIP's and Honors' sakes? PLEASE NOTE THE ASSIGNMENT OF ADD’L PROPOSALS (SUBMITTED LATE); DONE 5. Divvy up EBC props in order to complete their review by 24 February. Ideally, we'll work in 5 teams of 2 with each team looking at approx 22 props. We can figure out the math together, if need be. • Anita and Anne, prop #1-25 (remember to go by prop number and not spreadsheet line #) + 127, 128 • • • • Kemille and Cara, #26-50 + 126, 129 Heidi and Kathy, #51-75 + 130, 131 Curry and Bill, #76-100 + 132, 133 Michael and Phil, #101-125 + 134 INFORMED FACULTY WHO PROPOSED THEMES FOR WHICH WE ASKED FOR REVISIONS THAT WE WOULD ACCEPT REVISED THEME PROPS UNTIL 21 FEB FOR FALL 2012 LAUNCH; ACTIVELY PURSUING INPUT ON HOW TO CRAFT FORMAL SENATE MOTION REFLECTING COMMITTEE’S INTEREST IN DECOUPLING STUDENT’S DECLARATION OF CLUSTER THEME AND CATALOGUE YEAR 6. Discuss when to re-review Cluster theme revisions. So far, we've rec'd the Public Health revision. At issue here is how to make the rolling nature of theme development workable. Should we review the revision and include this theme along with the other 9 for implementation next fall? Or, should we review after we get through EBC and current theme course inclusion with an eye toward getting Public Health and other revised themes on the books for 2013-14? USAC IN FULL SUPPORT OF UC’S PROPOSAL TO ACADEMIC STANDARDS 7. Discuss and vote upon FYS’s repeat policy: Under University Studies – Waiver of Requirements First-Year Seminar: Students who meet any of the following conditions will be waived from the First-Year Seminar requirement: 1.) Transfer students 2.) Re-enrolling and reinstated students who have returned and have 27 hours of academic credit (UNCW and transfer credit). Under University Studies – next to the First-Year Seminar listing. Students who have completed and passed the First-Year Seminar while in the Isaac Bear Early College program have met this requirement. Students must complete and pass the First-Year Seminar during their first semester at UNCW. Students who drop or withdraw from the First-Year Seminar must take the course during the following spring semester. Students who fail the First-Year Seminar must repeat the course during the following spring semester. This does count as one of the three course repeats. Because the FirstYear Seminar is required for graduation, students must repeat this course, even if they have used all of their course repeats. Under the course repeat policy, students who earn a C- or below in the First-Year Seminar may retake the course. This must be done in the spring semester after they have taken the course the first time. APPROVED 8. Vote upon proposed catalogue clarification of LDN/LGS double count policy (to appear immediately after the headings for both components): In satisfying the requirements of II. Approaches and Perspectives, students may double count one course from either e. Living in Our Diverse Nation or f. Living in a Global Society if that one course also appears in the list of courses under a. Aesthetic, Interpretive, and Literary Perspectives; b. Scientific Approaches to the Natural World; c. Understanding Human Institutions and Behaviors; or d. Historical and Philosophical Approaches.
