University Studies Advisory Committee: Minutes April 28, 2010 4pm – 6pm Attendance: Boomershine, Cilano, Cox, Fort, Gurganus, Moore, Orton, Pemberton, Sawrey, Siefert, Taylor Issues: • Concern: 9% approval rate for this week’s proposals • If we need to submit a University Studies curriculum by September to the Faculty Senate, when will faculty be able to revise and resubmit, especially since they have not received our feedback yet in most cases o we need to have all approved courses in the University Studies curriculum by the FS meeting o maybe we can meet with department chairs to present the courses that need to be revised as a means to get revisions started • Can we push back the deadline to spring 2011 or later? o we need the Administration’s opinion/feedback on this o the Registrar’s office needs time to build degree audits and the schedule • Are departments not going to be able to revise and resubmit during the summer? o if not, we cannot finish by September 2010 o department chairs are 12 month employees and should be able to handle the revisions themselves • Can we distinguish wording/minor changes from major changes for Kim? o this is part of the process – departments need to be responsible or changes • If we ignore SLOs that are not measurable or actionable, will that be a problem for U.S. assessment? o Linda: Definitely. Linda is willing to meet with departments or faculty. Or, we could have open sessions for departments and faculty to drop in. • Maybe we could focus on the rationale and SLOs, and not include means of learning and assessment for the August deadline? o If and only if they are required to attend workshops to work on learning and assessment before they offer the course for the first time • Recommendation: as soon as we go through all of the submissions once, we should invite chairs to discuss revisions o do this by department, by component, by common error? o work in pairs to meet with as many chairs as possible as soon as possible o perhaps teams could meet with corresponding chairs for their components’ submissions 1 • How specific do we need to be on the assessment portion of the form? o Linda has examples of model responses where the means of assessment are relevant to each SLO o faculty may respond ‘duh’, that is how we are going to use each quiz/test o a score of 2 for assessment means the assessment means were not linked to each SLO, whereas a 3 indicates that the means are SLO-specific • Cox effect: If the form is bad, but the syllabus is good, do we approve that or send it back? o the form is very important, as much as the syllabus o send it back and ask them to revise form with info from syllabus • overall: keep up our standards and when we meet with chairs encourage them to follow instructions and revise accordingly • working in teams worked very well • transfer students will need to know about Business requirements – we need to encourage them to submit their common requirements courses o we could let the transfer students continue under the old BS system until the entire university is ready (including professional schools) o this should be part of our recommendation to Faculty Senate • Are the revised/resubmitted submissions being scored? o FNA 102 has been resubmitted • We need to adjust the due date or the meeting time so that Kim has time to come up with a compiled list of what needs to be discussed and why o new due date: submit scores Tuesday by noon Course Submission Review: • 177: PSY 410: IL: approved • 179: PSY 417: CC: approved • 182: PSY 412: CC: approved • 185: ANT 105: HIB: approved • 188: ANT 207: UHIB: approved • 200: EVSL 120: SANW: approved • 216: GGY 435: WI: approved • 217: GGY 436: WI: approved 2 • 226: GLY 470: CC: approved • 236: CLA 330: WI: approved • 238: CLA 210: AIL: approved • 240: CLA 210: WI: approved • 241: CLA 209: AIL: approved • 242: CLA 209: WI: approved • 268: CHM 491: CC: approved • 283: MAT 495: CC: approved • 294: STT 490: CC: approved • 314: CHM 101: SANW: approved Items for next week: • finish up your teams’ scoring • Team 4: look at IL • Team 2: look at FL • Team 1: look at MS • Team 3: finish up QLR • share scores with team and upload them to scoring system by Tuesdays at noon • send Kim summer schedule times (when you are available/unavailable) • next meeting: May 5, 4pm 3
