GEOGRAPHY AND PLANNING
Minor Program Revision
Regional and Urban Planning – BA Honours, 4YR
Revisions: The course POLS 112.3 has been dropped from the section B1 (Basic Social
Science Requirements).
Three 'Notes' were added to the Program Description to inform students of some of the
subtleties of the Interdisciplinary Regional and Urban Planning major that do not
necessarily apply to non-majors taking some of the courses in POLS, ECON & GEOG.
Rationale: t would be better for students to forego the junior POLS Departmental
prerequisite of POLS 112.3 and have greater opportunity to specialise in other more
senior courses. This decision was made at the level of the Regional and Urban Planning
Administrative Committee and subsequently agreed upon at a meeting of Political
Studies. The explanatory notes represent agreements made with Departments that are
involved in the RUP interdisciplinary program (i.e., ECON, GEOG & POLS).

Calendar Description:
B.A. Four-year or Honours Regional and Urban Planning
The following requirements in the RUP program are effective September 2009.
Students who begin their study at the U of S in September 2009 should follow the new
requirements. Students who began prior to September 2009 can follow the old program
or the new program; however, one program must be chosen and followed exclusively.
Note: No more than 6 credit units from one subject may be used to meet Requirements
B1 to B4.
B1 Basic Social Science Requirements (12 credit units)
ECON 111.3 and 114.3
POLS 111.3 (see Note 1 below)
3 c.u. Social Science
B2 Humanities (6 credit units)
6 credit units from the Humanities
B3 Natural Science (6 credit units)
MATH 101.3 or 110.3 (MATH 110.3 recommended)
3 credit units from the Natural Sciences
B4 Language (6 credit units)
6 credit units from the Languages
B5 Elective (6 credit units)
6 credit units selected from the areas of Humanities, Natural Science or Fine Arts, such
that no more than 6 credit units from one subject are used in Requirements B1 to B4.
B7 Electives Requirement
a) Required Cognate Courses
GEOG 222.3 (see Note 2 below), 240.3 (see Note 3 below), 341.3, 342.3, 343.3, 346.3,

RUP 390.3, 395.3, 490.3, and 495.3
3 c.u. in STATS from the list of courses eligible for Arts & Science credit [e.g. Stats
244.3 - for details, see Mathematics and Statistics] or any other statistics course
approved by the Chair of the Regional and Urban Planning program.
ECON 211.3 or 213.3, 347.3 or 349.3, and 348.3
POLS 306.3 and 3 credit units senior POLS from Public Admin and Public Policy subfield (POLS 222.3, 225.3, 226.3, 322.3, 323.3, 326.3, 328.3, 352.3, 422.3, 424.3, 425.3,
or 443.3)
SOC 111.3, 112.3, and 204.3 or 206.3; BPBE 432.3 (formerly AGEC 432.3)

POLS 222.3, 322.3, 323.3, 422.3.
3
b) Open Electives – Courses to complete the requirements for the 120 credit unit Fouryear or Honours degree program. Of the 120 c.u. required at least 66 must be at the
200-level or higher and no more than 60 can be in one subject. A course used to fulfill
requirement (a) may NOT be used again to fulfill requirement (b). Students are
encouraged to consult the Chair of the Regional and Urban Planning program about
suggested groupings of elective courses to create a specialization in Environmental
Management; Aboriginal Affairs; Transportation; Economic Development; Public Policy &
Administration; Northern Communities; or Geomatics.
Notes:
Senior POLS classes (i.e., 200-level and above) require 6 credit units of 100-level POLS
as a prerequisite. However, students who have declared Regional and Urban Planning
as their major require only POLS 111.3 (not 111.3 and 112.3) as a prerequisite for senior
POLS classes listed as RUP program requirements. Students taking other senior POLS
classes – not listed as RUP program requirements – will require the normal prerequisite.
Students who have declared Regional and Urban Planning as their major do not require
any prerequisite courses for GEOG 222.3 and should submit a prerequisite waiver form
to the course instructor at the beginning of term.
Students who have declared Regional and Urban Planning as their major do not require
GEOG 130.3 as a prerequisite for GEOG 240.3. Regional and Urban Planning majors
should submit a prerequisite waiver form to the course instructor at the beginning of
term.
