UNCW WOMEN’S STUDIES & RESOURCE CENTER ADVISORY BOARD
Purpose
The purpose of the UNCW Women’s Studies & Resource Center Advisory Board is to act in an advisory
capacity to the Director and staff of the WSRC and the Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and
Inclusion in matters regarding the management and operation of the WSRC.
The board comprises 18 voting members and designated non-voting, ex-officio members. All appointments
shall be approved by the Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion. Faculty and staff will be
appointed for a two-year term; students shall be appointed for a one-year term. The full board will meet
approximately two times per semester during the academic year. Whenever possible, meeting agendas will be
distributed prior to each meeting, with the Director of the WSRC serving as Director. Decision-making will be
by consensus whenever possible or by simple majority voting if necessary. The WSRC staff will provide
information to the WSRC Advisory Board in its annual report.
Membership
Members shall be solicited and appointed by the Director of the WSRC to ensure representation and
interaction among students, faculty, staff and representatives from the greater Wilmington community
who support women’s issues. Every member, with the exception of the community members, shall be a
current employee of UNCW (at least 2/3 of the voting members of the board must be full-time), or an
enrolled graduate or undergraduate student who is in good academic and disciplinary standing at
UNCW at the time of his/her appointment and throughout his/her term. A voting member, with the
exception of the community members, shall have been an employee or student at UNCW for one semester
(two summer sessions will be considered one semester), prior to his/her appointment. Members are asked
to represent the resources, services and constituents of the group from which they have been recruited.
The 18 voting members shall consist of:
• Two (2) students at Large appointed for one year terms (including WSSA president).
• Four (4) faculty members, one from each of the four colleges/schools (CAS, Education, College of Health
and Human Services, & Business) for two year terms approved by the respective chairs.
• One (1) staff member approved by the Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion for two
year terms.
• One (1) Randall Library representative approved by the University Librarian for a two year term.
• One (1) representative approved by the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs
• Two (2) Community representatives appointed by the WSRC Director in consultation with the Assoc.
Provost for Institutional Diversity & Inclusion. (for example, a representative from AAUW, Rape Crisis
Center of Coastal Horizons Ctr. Inc., the YWCA-Lower Cape Fear)
• One (1) Faculty Member Teaching WMS 210 at least one semester in the academic year
• Recipient (1) of annual Janet Mason Ellerby Women’s and Gender Studies Scholarly Award
• Five (5) Faculty or Staff at Large

Non-voting, ex-officio members may include:
• Women’s Studies & Resource Center Director
• Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity & InclusionDirector of CARE/Crossroads or designee
• Administrative Assistant for the Women’s Studies & Resource Center
• Asst. to the Chancellor for Human Resources or designee
At the start of each meeting, the director of the WSRC will ask for a note take or the meeting will be recorded.
This position will rotate. Minutes will be taken at each board meeting and shall be distributed for approval to
members within three weeks after each meeting. At least one permanent file of the minutes shall be maintained
in the WSRC. To conduct business, quorum will consist of one half of the voting members of the advisory
board or a minimum of 7 if all seats are not filled.
Any member of the Advisory Board may be removed by a (2/3) vote of the voting membership. Circumstances
necessitating removal may include missing three meetings of the Board without excuse and notification to the
Director or non-performance of duties. The appropriate body or department would be notified of the need for a
new appointee.
Guests previously recognized by the Director may attend meetings of the Advisory Board. Upon recognition of
the Advisory Board, guests may participate in the discussion.
Functions and Responsibilities of the Board:
1. The Board meets approximately two times each semester during the academic year. An annual schedule of
meetings will be established each year.
2. During summer, the Director will convene an ad hoc committee of WSRC board members who are available
to provide input as needed.
3. The Board is advisory to the WSRC Director and the Assoc. Provost for Diversity & Inclusion in all aspects
of the WSRC operation. The Board will be asked to consider such items as:
• Review policies, procedures and practices.
• Provide suggestions to the WSRC Director and assistance to the operations and success of the Women’s
Studies & Resource Center.
• Review of issues arising from the operations of the WSRC, its programs and services.
• General discussions of campus and community issues related to issues of women and gender.
Committee Structure
Three (3) ad hoc sub-committees such as Women’s Studies Minor, Programs and Campus Life, Community
Engagement – will be convened as needed. At the first meeting of the year, members will select at least one
sub-committee, but no more than two, for participation. WSRC staff will provide advice and support to the subcommittee as needed. The sub-committees will provide in-depth examination of issues as they are identified
and report to the full board for action at each regular meeting.
Other ad hoc committees may be developed on an as needed basis.
