Built around salmon canneries and sawmills, Ketchikan was
once proclaimed the Salmon Capital of the World. Its unique
culture is celebrated through its renowned collection of totem
poles, an accolade to Native art. Situated at the foot of Deer
Mountain, Ketchikan is backed by steep, forested slopes
and fringed by a pristine waterfront, creating an impossibly
beautiful backdrop. Not far in the distance is the Tongass
National Forest—the nation’s largest, abundant with wildlife
and the peaceful aura of the North Country.
History, nature and local personality are larger than life in
this port city that sits on the frontier of Canada’s wilderness.
Wonderful attractions bring its ancient native culture and
pioneer heritage to life, while its legendary sport fishing
and wildlife viewing—from whales to wild bears to soaring
eagles—lend a perfect touch of wilderness and a greater
appreciation for the interaction between human civilization
and the natural world.
TRACY ARM, ALASKA
Veering through the scenic Tongass National Forest, Tracy
Arm is a stunning fjord of unparalleled beauty featuring
2,000-foot granite walls rising straight out of the water,
snow-capped mountaintops, massive tidewater glaciers
and towering waterfalls permeating the shoreline. This
magnificent waterway is highlighted by Sawyer Glaciers, a pair
of translucent, sapphire glaciers and a gallery of icebergs that
float down this narrow slice of calm water, where seals and
whales are often spotted.
WRANGELL, ALASKA
Situated near the mouth of the Stikine River, this small and
friendly city still honors its dramatic past. Once a Tlingit
Indian stronghold, then a Russian settlement, later a British
trading post, and ultimately purchased by the U.S., Wrangell
commemorates the changes it has endured. Its museum offers
insight into the three gold rushes that transformed the area and
a glimpse of its native past can be found at a traditional Tlingit
tribal house.
