Griffin Flood Photo Digitization Project
ULM Library Special Collections was
awarded a grant from the Louisiana
Board of Regents that will enhance
student engagement and curriculum
support through the availability of electronic resources. The grant will provide for on-line access to many resources held by Special Collections and
to hopefully, acquire digital copies of
resources held by members of the community. Equipment and software has
been ordered that will be used to make
digital copies of photographs, photographic negatives, microfilm and microfiche. Storage for electronic copies
is being explored and plans are underway for a University of Louisiana at
Monroe presence on the Louisiana
Digital Library. The first collection to
be digitized is the Griffin Flood Collection. This collection contains over 300
images taken by Durwood Griffin during the 1932 Ouachita River Flood.
These photographs provide first hand
glimpses of rising
water around homes
and businesses, aerial photos of
Ouachita parish,
photographs of Red
Cross workers, men
patrolling the levees
and filling sandbags,
and of workers lining
up for meals and for
pay at the Ouachita
Parish Courthouse,
motor vehicles,
trains ,and horse drawn wagons. Outreach is being planned that will include
site visits to libraries and museums in
the area.
