We hope that your spring semester is off to a wonderful start. On behalf of the CFFLC, thank you for all that you do for our students, our community, and the profession as a whole. We hope to connect with many of you at one or both of our two meetings this semester. February is packed with so many exciting events that there is just no other way to describe it. It’s going to be SUPER! … and I’m not even talking about the Panthers’ return to the Superbowl. Take a look at what’s coming up over the next several weeks, and prepare to be amazed! You’ll want to pay particular attention to our special February 6 professional development meeting, as participants will need to register for the event by Monday, February 1. FEBRUARY MEETING We are excited about our next meeting on Saturday, February 6, 8:30am – 12:00pm. Vista Higher Learning is sponsoring a 3-hour professional development session titled “A Little Technology Never Hurt Anyone, as Long as It Is Done in Moderation.” This event is free and open to all; however participants must register by Monday, February 1. Come experience presentations, crafts, food, and more from all over the globe. Don’t forget to swing by the CFFLC table to pick up your passports! Page 2 of 5 EXCITING STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY FOR SPANISH TEACHERS Amanda Boomershine and L. J. Randolph will be leading a study abroad trip to Santiago, Dominican Republic, during the summer of 2016 (July 5-22). The trip was designed specifically for practicing Spanish teachers at the K-12 level and graduate students (or advanced undergraduates) of Spanish. Students will have the opportunity to earn 3.0 credit hours at the graduate or undergraduate level by taking one of the following two courses: 1) Teaching Spanish for Transformation and Social Justice or 2) Spanish Sociolinguistics and Variation. The program also includes a group service-learning project, excursions to several Dominican cities, opportunities for immersion and interaction with various communities, and much more. Both meetings will take place in Leutze Hall 130. FLANC 50TH ANNIVERSARY CALL FOR PROPOSALS NOW OPEN! The Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) is excited to have its 50th anniversary conference in Durham, NC, October 6-8, 2016. The conference theme is #FLANC 50: Empowerment, Transformation, and Social Justice. Please submit your original, innovative ideas for language teaching. We encourage sessions that show how world language education promotes social justice and develops students’ intercultural communicative competence, but sessions in all areas of world language education Page 3 of 5 are welcome. We also welcome sessions that address teaching ideas for specific age levels or languages. Presenters have four options: 1) 50-minute Friday/Saturday session, 2) research roundtable presentation (20-minute paper presentation and discussion), 3) Saturday post-conference workshop (3 hours), and 4) Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday pre-conference webinar (2 hours). CFFLC SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP (HIGH SCHOOL) The deadline for the CFFLC scholarship ($200) for a graduating high school student is February 20. The scholarship will be awarded at our April 16 meeting. March 1, 6:30pm, Lumina Theater. 2015-2016 PROGRAM If you haven’t already done so, please mark your calendars for the final meeting of the year on April 16, 8:45am-12:00pm. Dr. Jeff Ertzberger from the Watson College of Education will give an engaging workshop on the creative use of technology in the world language classroom. We’ll also have our world-famous CFFLC Raffle, which is always a good time! All meetings are held in Leutze Hall 136 and adjacent rooms. Attendees may park in Lot G (north of Leutze Hall). More information about each program will be distributed in subsequent newsletters. As always we will keep track of attendance for the year and will distribute Page 4 of 5 certificates verifying attendance at meetings. These may be used to request CEU credit from your school system. The February professional development session will be sponsored by Vista Higher Learning. SCHOLARSHIPS: Our scholarship program continues to be a success. We awarded three scholarships to UNCW students last year and one to a graduating senior in high school for a total of $1100. CFFLC is proud to announce that scholarships awarded since the inception of the program in 1995 total $13,525. This includes $300 given by Vista Higher Learning in November 2014. All other funds have been raised by the membership of CFFLC.
