PROPOSAL TO DESIGNATE AN EXISTING
COURSE AS ORAL COMMUNICATION INTENSIVE
UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Wilmington, NC 28403
Course: Research Methods in Health, Physical Education, and Health
Department: Health and Applied Human Sciences
Course Number: PED 359 Title: Research Methods in Health, Physical Education, and
Health
*Current Catalogue Description:
There is no change in the course catalog description; however, here is the current description of
the course as stated within the catalogue.
PED 359. Research and Evaluation in Health, Physical Education and Health (3) Prerequisite:
PED 355. Methods of research in the field of physical education and health. Identification of
research problems, sampling methods, data analysis and interpretation, and planning of
evaluation studies.
Description of assignment(s) that involve a solo oral presentation:
As a course requirement, students are required to derive a research topic of interest, review the
literature pertaining to their topic of interest via PubMed (or other electronic databases made
available by way of the library), derive a purpose statement, then finally, develop methodological
procedures to answer the question of interest. Once this 10- to 12-week phase is completed,
students will have completed the first three Chapters of their thesis.
It is at this juncture where students are educated about the subsequent processes and procedures
that occur at the next level (i.e., Master and Doctoral degree). More specific, students are taught
that subsequent steps following the thesis proposal are data collection, data reduction, derivation
of conclusions, and finally, thesis defense. As a note, to reiterate, the aforementioned is only
taught and not actually performed due to time constraints.
Once the thesis defense is completed, it is now time for the students to present their
hypothetically completed study at a mock scientific conference (e.g., American College of Sports
Medicine). Because students will not have actually completed data collection and analyses,
students will select a scientific article of interest from their reference page. It is this scientific
article that students are required to present as their hypothetically-completed thesis. In this oral
presentation, at the mock scientific conference, students are required dress in professional attire
while providing their 15-minute PowerPoint presentation to the scientific audience.
Please refer to attachment in regards to the PPT oral presentation guidelines (PED 359 Oral
Competency Presentation Guidelines.doc). Thank you.
How will the presentation be evaluated?
Please refer to attachment with respect to the evaluation of the presentation (PED 359 Oral
Competency Presentation Evaluation.doc). Thank you.
Estimated percentage of final grade assigned to oral presentation:
The 15-minute PowerPoint oral presentation is worth 30% of student’s grade. Please refer to
attachment with respect to the syllabus (PED 359 Oral Competency Syllabus.doc). Thank you.
