Bachelor of Music in Music Education: 91-93 hours. (Core plus 44-46 hours in music and 25 hours in education.)
In addition to the core requirements listed above, the music education major must complete 14 hours (7 semesters) of applied music in the major applied instrument, with not less than 6 hours (3 semesters) at the 300 level; 7 hours of music ensemble (minimum of 1 during each semester of residency); and 23-25 hours from the following:
Piano and Guitar majors (23-24 hours) ): MUS 272, 273, 285, 286, 301, 306, 326, 331, 377, 393, 401. Guitar and piano majors must take a minimum of four semesters of MUS 186 for their major ensemble, and MUS 146 in addition, if required, based on the singing placement test results.
Justification for request or degree change:
All catalogue changes in music education degree options are being provided in one attachment.
This request realligns the music ed option for piano and guitar majors with the vocal option. Having piano and guitar majors follow the vocal option rather than the instrumental option better prepares them for the public school teaching for which they will qualify. Their instrumental skills are most closely aligned with choral and general music settings rather than band or orchestra settings. This change also aligns our curriculum with that of other universities in the state.
Yes No Does this proposal require University Curriculum Committee (UCC) or Faculty Senate approval (refer to http://www.uncwil.edu/facsen/ucc/ )? ( If yes, forward proposal to the UCC and complete and submit the appropriate UCC form(s). If approved, this proposal must be signed by the UCC Chair and Faculty Senate President and forwarded to the Provost.)
