July 2008 P R A I R I E V I E W A &M U N I V E R S I T Y Capital Campaign Progress Earlier this year, we asked the forty recognized alumni chapters and classes to commit to a five-year capital campaign pledge based on their previous annual giving (average alumni group gift is $6300 per year). Through May 2008, 23 percent of the alumni groups have honored our request by committing more than $380,000 in gifts and pledges. While this may be true at other institutions, here at Prairie View A&M University, we appreciate it all. As more of a rule rather than an exception, we always look for opportunities to thank our friends and supporters for their philanthropic efforts by: complimenting board members on their volunteerism; inviting supporters to participate in special events; sending recognition gifts and acknowledgements; and one that is new to our area, sharing the news and highlights of the fundraising activities at the University. This issue of the Extend the View newsletter is a tribute to our donors for their support of the capital campaign (if additional individuals, corporations, business, or foundations make donations prior to December 31, 2008, their names will be added). Without the generosity of alumni and friends featured on the next few pages, we would not be within striking distance of our goal. Many years ago, H.T. Heald, of The Ford Foundation, spoke of alumni importance, “New generations of alumni provide the continuity that perpetuates a university. Its officers come and go, its facilities change, its programs and buildings are replaced, but its alumni maintain a lifelong relationship with the University. They are keepers of the tradition, preferred stockholders of the enterprise and the mark of the accomplishment”…That still holds true today and again, Thank You! NEWS & Notes: Online Giving - Alumni, students, parents and supporters of PVAMU now have the option to give to the University online. Using Pay Pal, online donors may use Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit cards. Increments between $1 and $14,000 are accepted online at www.pvamu.edu/giving. Nursing Gala - More than 700 University supporters gathered once again for the University’s annual “Celebrating the View” gala. This year’s gala celebrated the 90 year anniversary of the University’s world-renowned College of Nursing. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the University’s “Extend the View, Shape Tomorrow Today,” capital campaign and the College of Nursing. Endowment by definition is the transfer of money or property donated to an institution, usually with the stipulation that funds are invested and only the interest income expended. As a permanent fund, it provides an annual income stream that is used to sustain long-term operations. Lt. General (Retired) Julius Wesley Becton, Jr. graduated from Prairie View Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and Mrs. Louise T. Becton graduated in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing education. From 1989 until 1994, General and Mrs. Becton returned to their alma mater as president and first lady. General Becton served in the United States Army for almost 40 years and retired at the rank of Lieutenant General. He is a veteran of three wars and was the first graduate of Prairie View A&M University to attain star rank in the military. General Becton served as the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency from 1985 to 1989. His last civilian post was as CEO/Superintendent of public schools in the District of Columbia. General Becton has been listed several times by Ebony magazine as ‘One of the 100 Most Influential Blacks in America.’ In 2007, he was selected to receive the George Catlett Marshall Medal, the highest award presented by the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA), for being a ‘soldier, combat commander, administrator, educator, public servant, government leader, and role model.’ In April 2008, he received the University of Maryland President’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. General Becton’s autobiography, “Becton: Autobiography of a Soldier and Public Servant,” highlights his remarkable career and reveals the influences that contributed to his success. Currently, the book is available online and through major book sellers. At PVAMU, there are restricted and unrestricted endowments that make up the overall University endowment; 95 percent of these endowments are earmarked for scholarships or faculty chairs, which restricts the University’s discretionary use of the fund’s income. An advantage many majority institutions have is that a larger percentage of their constituents contribute unrestricted gifts to the General University Endowment understanding the need to have funds on hand for merit-based scholarships, student support, buildings renovations, innovative research projects and other general needs. How does the PVAMU endowment compare to other HBCU endowments? Prairie View’s endowment is valued at nearly $56 million and ranks in the top 10 percent among HBCUs and in the top 50 percent among the more than 1300 colleges and universities that reported endowment information in 2007.
