The Continuing Professional Development for Pharmacists
Immunization and Injection Training Program
This program will be CCCEP Stage II Accredited for a total of 30 CEUs
Proclamation of Bill 151 enhances the pharmacists’ scope of practice and welcomes a new class of pharmacy professionals in
Saskatchewan. Bill 151 has increased the services pharmacy professionals can provide to the public. Pharmacists now have the
authority to be even more integrated and proactive as part of the patient’s health care team.
CPDP injection training program prepares pharmacists to administer drugs by injection, in particular to administer flu vaccines to
patients during the flu season. The program meets the NAPRA competencies that were adapted from the Public Health Agency of
Canada competencies - http://napra.ca/pages/Practice_Resources/injectioncompetencies.aspx
The training is a two-part program which blends online learning with a live program which includes the theory and practical aspects
of administering drugs via injections.
Part 1 - Education Program for Immunization Competencies
First, you will need to complete the CCCEP accredited online program “Education Program for Immunization Competencies” (EPIC)
available through Advancing Practice. Developed by the Canadian Pediatric Society in association with the Public Health Agency of
Canada and Health Canada, EPIC provides participants with an in-depth review of the Immunization Competencies for Health
Professionals. The national consensus on the education and training required by immunization providers, is a 14 module online
th
program which has been CCCEP accredited for 22 CEUs. There is an additional 15 module which is specific to giving immunizations
in Saskatchewan and must also be completed before the live practice session. This is CCCEP accredited for 3.0 CEUs.
In keeping with SCPP requirements, before attending Part 2, you will need to have a current Standard First Aid/CPR C with AED
certificate (paid separately to the provider), check with CPDP for dates for Standard First Aid/CPR C with AED to complete such a
program independently through the University of Saskatchewan or the University of Regina, these are limited registration, so get
your name in early! In addition SCPP is strongly recommending getting your Hepatitis B immunization, as it is for your safety as well
as your patients.
Part 2 - Theoretical and Practical in Administration of Injections: A Course for Practicing Pharmacists
Part 2 of the training is a five-hour live workshop. In this interactive, hands-on workshop, pharmacists will learn the theory and put
into practice the skills of administering intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections. This is CCCEP accredited for 5.0
CEUs.
Note: To attend Part 2, you must complete Part 1 online in advance and have a current certification in
Standard First Aid/CPR C with AED. Deadlines will be in place prior to attending the live component
