M.SC. GRADUATE POSITION Toxicology Centre -‐ University of Saskatchewan A graduate research position (MSc) is available to assess the potential endocrine effects of municipal wastewater effluent on aquatic organisms. Saskatchewan is experiencing a significant increase in population growth, resulting in greater discharge of municipal wastewater effluent into local water bodies. There is concern regarding the impact of contaminants in this effluent, particularly endocrine active compounds, on aquatic organisms. This project will use a local fish species, the fathead minnow, to characterize of endocrine effects of effluent-‐impacted water. The student will be responsible for conducting laboratory-‐based effluent exposures with fish and will learn standardized fish reproductive assays including biochemical/molecular methods to assess endocrine modulation. This project is part of a larger initiative, Aquatic Impact Assessment of Municipal Effluents (AIME), supported by the Canadian Water Network as part of their Canadian Municipal Water Consortium Projects (http://www.cwn-‐rce.ca/initiatives/ municipal-‐consortium/municipal-‐projects/) Students must have a B.Sc in toxicology, biology, or a related field. Applicants should be highly motivated and exhibit strong communications skills. Experience working with aquatic animals would be an asset. A graduate stipend is guaranteed for 2 yr at $17,400/yr starting in early 2014. Applicants must meet the admission requirements for the Graduate Program in Toxicology (http://www.usask.ca/toxicology/index.php). Interested candidates should email a letter of interest, CV, and indication of academic performance (unofficial transcripts acceptable at this stage) to Dr. Natacha Hogan (natacha.hogan@usask.ca). Application review will begin December 1st, 2013 and will continue until the position is filled.
