Dr.Barnhart,interimpresidentspokeofthevalueofthemarketingandadvertisementsthe universityisplacingunderthetheme,“Knowledgeisbeautiful.“Heindicatedthathis understandingwasthatthequestionwaswhetheritwasnecessarytohavesuchacampaignwhen therearefacultymembersabletospreadthegoodworkoftheuniversityatconferencesand throughothervenues.Heacknowledgedthattheuniversityverymuchreliesontheeffortsof facultymemberstoattractnewfacultymembersandstudents,butthatadvertisementsalsospread theworkoftheuniversity.Whenareputationalsurveyisdone,itisdifficultforrespondentsto provideanopinioniftheyhavenorecognitionatalloftheUofS.Theadsofthecurrentcampaign havebeenplacedintheStarPhoenix,TheGlobeandMail,inairports,onbillboards,andextensively inCalgaryaspartofarecentcampaigninthatcity.HavingjustreturnedfromCalgaryaftermeeting withalumniandguidancecounselorsthere,hepersonallynotedthevalueofthecurrentmarketing campaignininfluencingstudentstoattendtheUofS. 5. ReportofthePresident ThepresidentcongratulatedDr.KalraonhiselectionaschairandrecalledtomembersDr.Kalra’s perfectattendancerecordaschairatCouncilmeetingsoverthepastfouryears.Dr.Barnhartalso expressedhisownpersonalsadnessatthepassingofDr.Kaplan. Withrespecttohiswrittenreport,thepresidenthighlightedthreekeypoints:theuniversity’s supportoftransgenderstudentsasevidencedbytherecentflag‐raisingceremonyinConvocation HallattheoutsetofTransgenderAwarenessweek;there‐thinkingofKenderdineCampusand requestforproposalstoestablishaprivatepartnershiptorenewthecampusatEmmaLakeandto requestthatSaskPowerrebuildthepowerlinetothesite;andtheofficialopeningandsod‐turning ceremonyforthenewchildcarecentre,whichwilldoublethenumberofchildcarespaceson campus.Asthetenderedcontractforthechildcarefacilitywas$217,000lowerthanexpected,the savedfundswillbeusedtosupportaddingadditionalspacestotheUSSUchildcarefacilityinthe WilliamsBuilding. Commentsandquestionswereinvited.ACouncilmemberrequestedthatifKenderdinecampusis renewedthatitholdfutureeducationalopportunitiesforuniversitystudents,notingthecampus wascentraltothetrainingofBiologystudentsinfieldstudiesanditslossisexperiencedwith regret.Thepresidentexpressedthathewasverymuchawareofthesignificanceofthecampusto thefineartsandthesciencesandthathehadspenttimeonthecampusthispastAugust. ReportoftheProvost ErnieBarber,provostandvice‐presidentacademicexpressedhispleasureatannouncingthisyear’s recipientsoftheProvost’sTeachingAwardsasreportedinhiswrittenreport.Apublicceremony willbeheldtorecognizeawardwinners.HeinvitedCouncilmemberstojoinhimatthattimein offeringcongratulationstorecipientsortooffertheirownpersonalcongratulationstoaward winners.Therewerenoquestionsoftheprovost. 7. ReportoftheVPResearch Dr.ChadthankedCouncilfortheopportunitytopresentareportontheuniversity’sinnovation agenda,recallingthiswasthesecondyearshehadreportedtoCouncilinthismanner.Sheindicated thatinJuneshewouldprovideheroverallwrittenreporttoCouncilsummarizingtheyear’s activitiesofheroffice. ThereporthighlightstheestablishmentoftheCanadaFirstResearchExcellenceFund,a1.5billion‐ dollarinvestmentlaunchedinDecember2014,withtwocompetitionsin2015.Theuniversity submittedtheproposal“DesigningCropsforGlobalFoodSecurity”tothefirstcompetitionin March.TheresultswillbeannouncedinJuly.Submissionstothesecondcompetitionareduein October,andDr.Chadindicatedaprocessisbeingdevelopedtoinviteparticipantsattheuniversity tobeengagedinthenextandfuturecompetitions. Dr.Chadreportedonthefirstinaseriesofresearchcafésheldthedayprior.Thecafésarehostedto incubateideasandprovidecross‐collaborationandmentorshipacrossvariousfieldsofresearch. Theintentistohavemanycafésthroughouttheyear.Therearethematiccafésandcafésopento anyidea. Aseriesofphotographicandotherimagesfromtherecent“ImagesofResearch”competition launchedthisspringweredisplayed.Inresponsetoacallforentries,therewere90entriesfrom across10schoolsandcollegesinvariousentrycategories,including:viewers’choice,fromthefield, morethanmeetstheeye,communityandimpact,researchinaction,andgrandprizewinner.Dr. ChadrecognizedThomasOnion,strategicprojectsspecialistforhiscreativityandcontributionsto theinauguralcompetition. ThechairinvitedquestionsofDr.Chadanddiscussionofherreport.ACouncilmemberspokein favouroftheresearchcafésandinquiredhowshemightfindoutwhentheseareheld,asshehadno knowledgeofthemostrecentcafé.Dr.Chadindicatedthatnoticesareplacedontheuniversity websiteandthattheassociatedeansofresearch,thedeansofcolleges,andtheexecutivedirectors ofschoolsweresentanoticewiththerequesttodistributeitwidely.Shecommittedtoenhancethe distributionandalsotodistributeaschedulefortheyear,whichwouldidentifythecafétopicsin advance. 8. Studentsocieties 8.1 ReportfromtheUSSU DesiréeSteele,USSUvice‐presidentacademic,presentedtheUSSUTuitionConsultationReport, whichhasasitsbasisthatconsultationwithstudentsontuitionratechangescontinuetooccurdue tothefundamentalimportanceoftuitioncoststothestudentbody.Thereportrelaysthedegreeto DraftuntilapprovedattheMaymeeting. whichstudentswereconsultedoverthepastyearandsuggestsareasforimprovementandbest practices.Thereportisbasedoninputfromstudentrepresentatives,includingpresidentsofcollege societiesandmembersoftheUSSUStudentCouncil.OnbehalfoftheUSSU,Ms.Steeleurgedall associatedeans,deans,executivedirectors,studentsandstudentrepresentatives,theInstitutional PlanningandAssessmentOffice,andtheBoardofGovernorstodotheirbesttoensurethat consultationontuitionwithstudentsbecomesafirmly‐heldtradition. TheUSSUExcellenceAwardsweremadeatagalaeventonMarch29.Ms.Steeleaskedthatany formerawardrecipientsofUSSUTeachingExcellenceAwardsstandtoberecognized.Ms.Steele alsorecognizedJamieLabrecque,studentCouncilmember,whowastherecipientofastudent excellenceawardrecognizinghercontributions. Planningandprioritiescommittee ProfessorLisaKalynchuk,chairoftheplanningandprioritiescommitteepresentedthereportto Council. 9.1 Reportforinformation:InstitutionalPriorities Dr.KalynchuknotedthepurposeofthereportwastoupdateCouncilontheongoingdiscussion withpriorityleadersabouttheeightinstitutionalprioritiesidentifiedforactionthisyear.The reportfocusesprimarilyonfouroftheeightpriorities,asdiscussedatacommitteemeetingwith priorityleadersonFebruary25.Themeetingwasinformativeandproductive,andshethanked leadersformeetingwiththecommittee.Thecommitteepreviouslymetanddiscussedtheother fourinstitutionalprioritieswithpriorityleadersandwillreporttoCouncilmorefullyinthefuture ontheseasdiscussioncontinues.Examplesofengagementwiththeseprioritiesincludesmeeting withtheactingdeanoftheCollegeofGraduateStudiesandResearchabouttheoptionofkeeping thecollegeasanacademicunitversustransitioningittoanoffice,andafuturemeetingplanned withthedeanofMedicineabouttheaccreditationvisitscheduledfromMay10‐12.
