University Studies Component Form: Capstone Course
I. Rationale
Please provide a rationale for the course which explains how the course being proposed fits into this
component based on the component's description. For your convenience, the overall description and rationale
for this component are included below.
Overall Description and Rationale for Capstone Course
Capstone courses are a means to help students attain a holistic, integrated recognition of the key facets of
their education over the course of their university experience, particularly within the major. Such courses
should also provide faculty with the means to assess how well students have progressed in relation to the
UNCW Learning Goals and a subject area’s core learning outcomes. Assessment methods may include
portfolios, creative projects, research papers, or monitored field work—virtually any large scale project that
involves issues of the discipline and requires the student to bring multiple interrelated skills and knowledge
to bear for its completion. Some practicum (student teaching) and internship experiences may fulfill both the
Capstone and Explorations Beyond The Classroom requirements.
Brief Statement of Rationale for Course's Inclusion as Capstone Course
MUS 493. Senior Recital (1) Prerequisite: Consent of the music faculty. A
performance of at least 40 minutes of repertoire selected from the appropriate levels of
difficultly.
For the BM in Performance degree the senior recital is the culmination of four years of
study in music theory, history, pedagogy, applied lessons and ensemble. It requires
the student to integrate learning from all areas of the music curriculum in order to
research, prepare, program and perform a successful senior performance.
Prerequisite - MUS 393 Junior Recital.

II. Common Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Each course must address all of the Common Student Learning Outcomes for the component, and list these
Common SLOs along with course-specific SLOs in the model course syllabus (to be attached). For each
Common SLO, list the course SLOs that address the common SLO, describe the opportunities which will be
provided for students to learn the outcome (readings, class discussion and/or activities, applied projects), and
list the means of assessment (exams, papers, projects, quizzes, etc.) that will be used to determine the level of
student understanding.
CAP 1. Students will integrate key facets of their education over the course of their university
experience.
Course SLO(s) to Address CAP1
The student will synthesize experiences in all music and university courses in order to
research and choose appropriate literature, analyze the style and performance
practice for each piece, participate in applied learning with the instructor and
accompanist if appropriate, and plan, schedule and perform a senior recital reflecting
the work and growth during the students degree program.
Opportunities for Student Learning
(reading, researching, discussing, listening, viewing, etc.)
Students will attend a one hour applied lesson each week with an additional one to
four hours of outside practice daily so that the student is prepared for each lesson.
Each student must play at least once in seminar and once in departmental recital. The
student is responsible for setting up rehearsals with an accompanist if needed and for
arranging times when that accompanist can attend lessons. The student should also
arrange a dress rehearsal in the hall to be attended by the instructor.
Means of Assessing Course SLO(s)
(exams, papers, projects, quizzes, etc.)
1. Students must submit a recital proposal, with all pertinent information (e.g., titles,
composers, dates, performance times, etc.) to the major field committee for approval
at least two weeks prior to the intended registration of the recital (493).
2. A recital hearing should be scheduled by the instructor with the department chair as
early as six weeks, but no later than four weeks, prior to the tentatively scheduled date
anticipated for the recital. Presentation is to be in the form of the recital (memorized if
necessary).
3. Successful public performance of the senior recital.
Submission instructions:
Please submit cover form, all component forms, a model syllabus, and College/School’s course
action form (if needed) to your department chair. Department chairs should then submit these
