Special Note for Athletic Training**, Pre-Health, Biology,
Chemistry, or Nursing Students
**Athletic Training majors, please note the importance of taking BIO 201 during your first fall
semester as indicated in sequencing below.
Each Fall semester, approximately 300 first-year students enter UNCW stating an intent to
pursue a career in the health professions after completing their undergraduate studies.
Admission to post-graduate professional schools of health is highly competitive and the
academic and personal preparation required to be a successful applicant is both rigorous and
challenging.
Students may need to take different courses than the suggested schedule due to
placement exams, AP/IP/CLEP test scores, or previous college credit. The University Studies
courses can be found here.
In order to be a Biology, Chemistry, or Nursing Major (or if you are interested in going to a
graduate school of health), you will be required to take more than one science course during
a majority of your semesters at UNCW (i.e. Biology and Chemistry in the same semester).
Please note that students are NOT required to take two science courses in their first semester,
but taking two science courses in their first semester will prepare them for future study.
Getting admitted to Nursing and Medical Schools is not easy. For example, in Spring 2015
UNCW’s School of Nursing admitted 50 undergraduate students from an applicant pool of 132.
This means that 63% of applicants were turned away. Grades (average GPA of admitted
students was 3.96) and what semester you take classes can be very important. Please talk to
your advisor at Orientation for further information.
Please note that the courses listed are suggested courses. You may not be able to enroll in
them your first semester. Your advisor will help you adjust your schedule at Orientation.
