*BIO 240 requires prerequisites of BIO 201 and CHM 101. Students have the option to take
either BIO 240 and BIO 241 or EXS 216 and 217 (to fulfill Human Anatomy and Physiology I and
II requirement). For students planning to attend graduate school, BIO is what is needed.
**RTH 348 Practicum in RTH can be taken any semester after RTH 368 and before RTH 498 –
summer semester preferred since all class work is off-campus and 100 hours of volunteer
experience is required.

Recreation Therapy Concentrations
In lieu of the 9 hours of support course work students may choose a Recreation Therapy
Concentration in one of the following areas: (a) behavioral health, (b) geriatrics pediatrics, (c)
pediatrics or (d) physical rehabilitation.
o Behavioral Health Concentration: To complete a recreation therapy
concentration in behavioral health students must complete all the
required courses for the recreation therapy major, including RTH
497--002 Clinical Placement in Recreation Therapy—Behavioral
Health (12 credit hours); and 9 semester hours chosen from the
following courses:
 PSY 217 Learning and Behavior Change,
 PSY 220 Child Psychology,
 PSY 221 Adolescent Psychology,
 PSY 245 Drugs and Behavior,
 PSY 256 Brain and Behavior,
 PSY 275 Forensic Psychology,
 PSY 324 Developmental Psychopathology,
 SED 362 Teaching Students with Social, Emotional and
Behavior Problems,
 SOC 335 Sociology of Deviant Behavior,
 SOC 355 Children and Adolescents with Behavioral Disorders,
 SOC 375 Juvenile Delinquency,
 SOC 443 Sociology of Mental Illness, or
 Other courses related to behavioral health approved by
advisor.
o Geriatric Concentration: To complete a recreation therapy
concentration in geriatrics students must complete all the required
courses for the recreation therapy major, including RTH 497-003
Clinical Placement in Recreation Therapy—Geriatrics (12 credit
hours); plus GRN 101 Introduction to Gerontology, and 6 additional
hours chosen from the following courses:
 GRN 440 Current Issues in Gerontology,
 HEA 325 Health and Aging,
 PSY 324 Psychology of Aging,
 PSY 449 Psychology of Death and Dying,
 RTH 369 Recreation Therapy and Gerontology,
 SOC 220 Sociology of Death and Dying,
 SOC 336 Sociology of Aging, or
 Other courses related to gerontology/geriatrics approved by
advisor.
o Pediatric Concentration: To complete a recreation therapy
concentration in pediatrics students must complete all the required
courses for the recreation therapy major, including RTH 497-004

Clinical Placement in Recreation Therapy—Pediatrics (12 credit
hours); plus RTH 384 Recreation Therapy and Child Life for the
Hospitalized Child, ATR 470 Medical Terminology for Health
Professions and 3 additional hours chosen from the following courses:
 PSY 220 Child Psychology,
 PSY 221 Adolescent Psychology,
 PSY 320 Infancy/Early Childhood Development,
 SOC 220 Death and Dying,
 SWK 311 Child Abuse and Neglect, or
 Other courses related to pediatrics as approved by advisor.
Physical Rehabilitation Concentration: To complete a recreation
therapy concentration in physical rehabilitation students must
complete all the required courses for the recreation therapy major,
including RTH 497-005 Clinical Placement in Recreation Therapy—
Physical Rehabilitation (12 credit hours); plus ATR 470 Medical
Terminology for Health Professions, and 6 semester hours chosen
from the following courses:
 EXS 340 Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise,
 PED 350 Motor Behavior,
 RTH 362 Special Topics in Recreation Therapy (Adaptive
Sports),
 RTH 362 Special Topics in Recreation Therapy (Aquatic
Therapy), or
 Other courses related to physical rehabilitation approved by
advisor.
