UNCW Office of Institutional Research and Assessment Summary of Results from the Graduating Senior Survey 2013 The Graduating Senior Survey has been administered since 1998 by the UNC General Administration. Currently, the 16 post secondary institutions in the UNC system are required to survey their graduating seniors every third spring. Data from the surveys are used as part of state-wide assessment activities. The survey contains 96 items pertaining to academic and non-academic aspects of graduating seniors’ experience. This survey was significantly redesigned in Summer 2012 making cross year comparisons impossible for all but a few questions. The tables accompanying this report display the results from 2013 for all items, however, only academic items are additionally separated out by school/college. The survey itself is found in Appendix 1. In Spring semester 2013, 1,754 graduating UNCW seniors were invited via email to participate electronically in the Graduating Senior Survey. UNCW OIRA received 309 completed surveys for a response rate of 18%, higher than the 2012 response rate of 13% but less than the 2010 response rate of 39% and the 2008 response rate of 45%. Response rates in 2013 are shown by major in Table 1. Highlights of this report are that graduating seniors rated the intellectual environment and the quality of instruction in their major significantly higher than 5 years ago. Quality of instruction and overall education were rated as excellent. Graduating seniors were very satisfied with instructors in their major and perceived UNCW had contributed very much to their critical thinking and analytic skills. Academic Items – Overall Results Faculty Contribution: Respondents were asked to rate satisfaction with the faculty of their major department on 8 items measuring Faculty Contributions using a 5-point Likert scale: 1 = Very Dissatisfied, 2 = Dissatisfied, 3 = Neither Satisfied or Dissatisfied, 4 = Satisfied, 5 = Very Satisfied. Overall means for 2013 are presented below (see Table 2 for complete results by school/college). Satisfaction with Major Faculty Overall satisfaction with instructors in major 4.52 Provide helpful feedback 4.23 Provide timely feedback 4.07 Use instructional technology 4.30 Encourage class discussion 4.40 Explain course material 4.34 Explain the expectations 4.31 Ability to motivate 4.32 1 2 3 4 5 Academic Advising in Your Major: Respondents were asked to rate satisfaction with academic advising in their major department on 6 items using a 5-point Likert scale: 1 = Very Dissatisfied, 2 = Dissatisfied, 3 = Neither Satisfied or Dissatisfied, 4 = Satisfied, 5 = Very Satisfied and “Don't Know/ Not Applicable”, which was excluded from calculations of means. Overall means for 2013 are presented below (see Table 3 for results by school/college). Satisfaction with Major Academic Advising Academic advising overall 3.78 Knowledge about post-graduation employment options 3.95 Knowledge about post-graduation education options 4.04 Knowledge about campus policies 4.03 Providing accurate information to me 3.90 Spending sufficient time with me 3.82 1 2 3 4 5 UNCW Contribution to Knowledge, Skills and Personal Development: Respondents were asked to rate the extent to which their college education contributed to knowledge, skills, and personal development using a 4-point Likert scale: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Very little, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = Very much and “Don’t know”, which was excluded from calculations of means. Overall means for 2013 are presented below (see Table 4 for results by school/college). Additionally, 63.8% of respondents indicated they had participated in a co-op, internship, practicum, student teaching, or other field experience as part of their major. Those who had participated in these experiences were then asked to rate the extent of contribution to their personal and professional growth on a 4-point Likert scale: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Very little, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = Very much and “Don’t know”, which was excluded from calculations of means. Participating in such field experiences was seen as having “very much” of contribution to their personal growth; the overall mean rating was 3.70 (SD = 0.570) (see Table 5 for results by school/college). Also, 22.6% of respondents indicated they had worked on a research project with a UNCW faculty member outside of course or program requirements. Those who had worked on such a project were asked to rate the extent of contribution to their personal growth on a 4-point Likert scale: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Very little, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = Very much and “Don’t know”, which was excluded from calculations of means. Participating in such research projects was seen as having “very much” of a contribution to their personal growth; the overall mean rating was 3.72 (SD = 0.598) (see Table 6 for results by school/college). The final question in the knowledge, skills and personal development section asked whether they had participated in any community service project through UNCW (e.g. through a club, Greek life, or other University-sponsored activity). The 59.2% who indicated they had participated in such a project were asked to rate the extent to which this experience contributed to their personal and professional growth on a 4-point Likert scale: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Very little, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = Very much and “Don’t know”, which was excluded from calculations of means. Participating in such community service projects was seen as having “somewhat” of a contribution to their personal growth; the overall mean rating was 3.37 (SD = 0.734) (see Table 7 for results by school/college). Time to Graduation and Plans after Graduation: Respondents were asked their primary plans after graduation. A total of 44.2% of respondents indicated that they are currently seeking, or plan to seek paid employment. 18.2% of respondents indicated they will be going to graduate or professional school full-time next year and 11% of respondents said they have accepted a full-time paid job related to their field of study (see Table 8 for frequency of all responses). Additionally respondents were asked whether it had taken them longer than four years (i.e., eight consecutive semesters of enrollment) to graduate. Most (77.3%) said it did not take them longer. The 22.7% of respondents who indicated it had taken longer were asked to select from a list as many reasons they felt applied to them. A total of 45.7% respondents said it had taken them longer than four years to graduate because they had changed majors, 32.8% indicated they had lost credits when they transferred to UNCW, and 30% of respondents took a semester or more off for personal (nonfinancial) reasons (e.g., medical, family, etc.) (see Table 9 for frequency of all responses). Evaluation of intellectual environment, quality of instruction and overall education: Questions in this section did not change from previous versions of the survey; therefore, results are presented across years. Respondents were asked to rate the intellectual environment at UNCW using a 4-point Likert scale: 4 = Very strong, 3 = Strong, 2 = Weak, 1 = Very weak. Further, they were asked to rate the quality of instruction in their major, the quality of instruction overall, and the overall education at UNCW using a 4-point Likert scale: 4 = Excellent, 3 = Good, 2 = Fair, 1 = Poor. Mean scores and standard deviations for 2013 are shown below. Quality of instruction within major and overall education at UNCW were both rated as “excellent”. Means and standard deviations for 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 are presented for these questions in Table 10. o o o o Intellectual environment on this campus (M = 3.33, SD = .617) Quality of instruction in your major (M = 3.65, SD = .559) Quality of instruction overall (M = 3.25, SD = .670) Overall education at this institution (M = 3.55, SD = .611) Notably, according to analyses of variance comparing average overall responses from 2008-2013 on these questions, the average rating of the intellectual environment on this campus was significantly higher in 2013 (M = 3.33, SD = .617) than in 2008 (M = 3.15, SD = .578) and 2010 (M = 3.17, SD = .583), but did not differ from 2012 (M = 3.22, SD = .592), f(3, 1968) = 7.399 (p= .000) with a Scheffe post hoc analyses (p < .05). Also, the average rating of quality of instruction within major was significantly higher in 2013 (M = 3.65, SD = .559) than in 2008 (M = 3.52, SD = .559) but no different than 2010 (M = 3.59, SD = .629) or 2012 (M = 3.58, SD = .675), f(3, 1978) = 3.748 (p = .011) with a Scheffe post hoc analyses (p < .05). 2008 2010 2012 2013 2008 2010 2012 2013 For each question, years with different colored bars are significantly different.
