The course is designed for technicians, entrepreneurs, members of NGOs, coast guards, coastal managers, technical employees of hotels, coastal business people and educational officers who are interested in the field of coastal science and management of coastal resources. This short course will also appeal to young graduates who wish to acquire knowledge in coastal science. Upon successful completion of this CPD, a certificate will be awarded to participants.
3. AIMS
The aims are to: a) Gain knowledge of the coastal and marine environment. b) Have an appreciation of the coastal survey techniques. c) Get an insight on the status of coastal resources and the threats to coastal zones. d) Understand the value of coastal resources and the need for conservation and management. e) Identify the strategies adopted (especially in the SIDS region) to conserve and manage coastal resources. f) Appreciate involvement of international and multi-national organizations in managing coastal resources. g) Gain knowledge of Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Mauritius.
4. OUTLINE SYLLABUS
The participants will be introduced to holistic approach pertaining to coastal resources and its management. Topics on sustainable management, integrated coastal zone management and rules
and regulations of coastal resources are also included. Issues and impacts of water sports, tourism, coastal erosion, effluent discharge and management will also be discussed.
5. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the short course, participants should be able to :
6. a) Understand the characteristics of the coastal zone and coastal ecosystems. b) Understand the value of the coastal zone and the need for management of coastal resources. c) Be familiar with the threats and coastal hazards and coastal management strategies. d) Understand the importance of national jurisdictions and authorities and role of international and multi-national organizations in the management of coastal resources. e) Discuss Integrated Coastal Zone Management and the need for capacity building and adaptation/mitigation strategies to conserve and protect coastal resources.
