The School of Nursing offers two programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree: one with a major in professional
nursing and one with a major in clinical research. Admission requirements to the School of Nursing majors are listed in
the undergraduate catalogue and on the School of Nursing website, (http://www.uncw.edu/son).
Requirements for Admission to the Bachelor of Science Degree Programs in the School of Nursing
Bachelor of Science with a major in Clinical Research Option: 124 hours
To be considered for admission to the School of Nursing Clinical Research option, students must meet the
following criteria:
1) Admission to the University of North Carolina Wilmington as a degree-seeking pre-nursing student.
2) A 2.5 total GPA is required for evaluation of a student’s transcript by the School of Nursing. Each student’s total
GPA, including the fall semester/quarter grades of application year, is calculated on all transferable college
courses attempted at all accredited institutions of higher education according to the guidelines in use by the
UNCW Admissions Office.
3) Completion of UNCW University Studies
4) Completion of CLR prerequisite courses, as follows: BIO 201, 240, 241, 246, CHM 101, 102, MAT 111, PSY
105, 223, SOC 105, and STT 210.
5) A grade of “C” or better is required in each required CLR core course in order to progress; a “C-“or better is
required in all required non-CLR CHM courses in order to apply to/progress in the program; a “C” or better is
required in all required non-CLR courses (with the exception of CHM courses) in order to apply to/progress in the
program.
6) Documentation of physical, mental and emotional health that enables a student to participate in and complete the
program.
7) Completed Application to the Clinical Research Program
Special Requirements for all programs in the School of Nursing:
• Current immunization record (including TB or chest x-ray, Hepatitis B, and Varicella)
• CPR certification
• Professional liability insurance
• Verification of health insurance
• Negative drug screen
• Negative criminal background check
• Seasonal flu vaccine
Application Process: Admission to UNCW as a degree-seeking student is required prior to admission to the School of
Nursing. Transfer students must submit/complete an application to the UNCW Office of Admissions by posted admission
deadlines. In addition to acceptance by the University, all applicants must also submit a separate application to the School
of Nursing by above listed dates for fall or spring enrollment. All applicants will be notified of admission decisions.
NOTE TO ADVISORS: Students interested in CLR should see a Pre-CLR advisor and check the School of
Nursing WEB site carefully. Students may and should declare Pre-Nursing or Pre-Clinical Research with 24 hours
credit.

A “C” (2.00) or better is required in each required CLR core course in order to progress. A cumulative GPA average of 2.00 or better is required for
graduation. A “C-” (1.98) or better is required in all required non-CLR CHM courses in order to apply to/progress in program. A “C” (2.00) or better
is required in all required non-CLR courses (with the exception of CHM courses) in order to apply to/progress in the program.
NOTE: Many of the required courses are sequential, have prerequisites, and may be offered only once a year; therefore, it is imperative that students
consult with the academic advisor and follow the prescribed program of study. Students are also expected to complete the University Studies
requirements during the freshman and sophomore years because of the rigor and concentration of lab courses and the internship in the major. The
recommended 15-17 semester hour course load each semester is necessary to complete the program in four academic years. In addition to the
University Studies and required prerequisite courses, elective credits are also included in the 124 hours required for graduation.
