The Revitalization of Shoreland Vegetation Project (RSVP) is dedicated to preserving/restoring the native vegetation on the
shores of Big Green Lake, where waterfront properties are quite developed. To accomplish this goal, state, county, and
local government agencies, as well as schools, businesses, volunteer organizations, and private individuals, effectively
joined forces. Today, RSVP conducts workshops for property owners, realtors, and landscapers to teach sound shoreland
management, hosts annual public tours of shoreland restoration demonstration sites on both public and private properties,
provides cost sharing for restoration projects, certifies businesses in shoreland restoration, and offers the services of a
Shoreland Restoration Specialist to riparians and businesses.

Description for issues 1 and 2:
The number of shoreland dwellings has more than doubled on lakes north of Highway 29 from 1965 to 1995 (Northern
Initiatives study). This presentation explains how this development has affected the water quality and wildlife habitat of
our lakes and streams and provides examples of what communities are doing to protect their lakes for future generations.
Description for issue 4:
Nearly half of Wisconsin’s counties have recently updated their shoreland ordinances to address current challenges and
reflect the results of new research. This presentation can be tailored to provide you with options for updating your
ordinance to solve local problems
Description for issue 7:
Why have nearly half of the counties in Wisconsin chosen to tailor the management of their lakes and streams rather than
using the historical ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach? This discussion will describe how the process has worked in numerous
counties, how citizens have been involved, and the resulting public policies.
Description for issue 8:
Have you ever seen a local project that you were concerned about but not known what to do? This presentation focuses on
how and when citizens can become effective participants in local land use decisions.

The Wisconsin Lakes Partnership (Wisconsin Association of Lakes, DNR, and UW-Extension) has developed a new 10-year
strategy for protecting and restoring Wisconsin lakes. This presentation focuses on how citizens can help carry out the

working with the Wisconsin Association of Lakes in its stewardship to protect the environmental and economic
sustainability of our lakes.

The presentation by UWEX has examples of local research showing lake changes from development.
Susan Tesarik
Classification Outreach Coordinator with Wisconsin Association of Lakes
Madison office
800-542-5253
stesarik@execpc.com
Description for issues 1, 2 and 3:
Rampant waterfront development can change the very character of our lakes - from wild and scenic gems to just another
piece of suburbia. However, communities have an important opportunity to make wise decisions about the density, pattern,
and types of development and recreational use that is accepted at our waters today in order to maintain the character and
value of our lakes and streams for tomorrow's children. This presentation covers some of the studies that show impacts of
development and ways that we can save the lakes.
Description for issue 4:
Water Classification provides counties an opportunity to make wise decisions about the density, pattern, and types of
development that is accepted at our waters in order to maintain the character and value of our lakes and streams for future
generations. So, how'd they do that? This process can be presented as six shoreland management tools.
Description for issue 7:
Susan can provide a discussion of why counties are choosing to classify their lakes and streams rather than using the
historical 'one-size-fits-all' approach for shoreland management, how the process has worked in numerous counties
(including how citizens have been involved), and shoreland ordinances which have been implemented to protect water
quality, wildlife habitat and natural aesthetics.
Description for issue 10:
Waterfront property owners can help their lakes greatly by restoring their shorelines with natural vegetation. The result
can be beautiful, adding value to your property, as well as beneficial, adding wildlife habitat and pollutant buffering to
your lake. This presentation covers some of the basics: why shoreland restoration is helpful to your lake, restoration
options, and how to get started.
