Office of Human Resources Broadband Job Description – Technical/Paraprofessional Series - 7/1/2006 Technical/Paraprofessional Staff I (0757) Basic Purpose/Job Function: Responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunication equipment and other mechanical apparatus. Examples of Titles Replaced: Engineering Technician; Machinist; Telecommunications Cable Splicer; Telecommunications Technician I; Mechanical Technician Typical Functions May Include: 1. Installing, maintaining, splicing, and repairing various types of telecommunications cables and wires, as well as other mechanical equipment 2. Constructing precision mechanical parts and assemblies with the use of standard machine shop tools 3. Using tools such as lathe, milling machine, drill press, planer, shaper, grinder, saw, gas and electric welder, press and other assorted hand tools 4. Assisting faculty and students in developing the best manufacturing process for designs of mechanical parts 5. Repairing and conducting preventive maintenance on mechanical devices, tools, machines and equipment 6. Instructing students in the proper use of tools and machines for fabrication of mechanical parts or systems 7. Communicating with other departments as required to exchange information 8. Maintaining files and computerized records of communications equipment, inside plant and outside plant 9. M ay supervise other employees in the completion of similar tasks 10. Performing other related duties as assigned Risk Management: Uses established safety practices to protect the health and safety of personnel and property. Supervision of Others: Serves as lead operator on assigned shifts, providing technical direction; may have some supervisory responsibilities and in those instances will hire, train, fire, evaluate performance, and handle discipline issues per established university policies and procedures.
