Scott Quackenbush (Biology/Chair) Joan Willey (CMS/Associate Director) Recorder: Dennis Ihnat Discussion Item: General Discussion Dan stated that the 500MHz NMR is on order, being obtained in cooperation with AAI/Pharma. Dan is working on proposal to use RO system to salinate ICW water. $100K available. DOI likes pre-proposal. Proposal due in August. Discussion Item: CMS Strategic Plan Missing Faculty cross-cutting team input (Kieber or Szmant?) Dan stated that the collaborative seminar program is not working. Also, Faculty meetings not well attended. Ratification of Strategic Plan – Martin suggested first faculty meeting before school starts Ron recommends “retreat” (w/lunch) to bring faculty together (no evening, possibly Saturday). Perhaps something like a “Shrimparoo” on a Saturday in September, a jbig to-to, could catch on & become annual or semi-annual event. Martin – on voting issues, recommend authorize proxy votes so all have opportunity to participate, even if cannot attend vote. Dan suggested increased use of the web page for general information. Dick stated that we should also send e-mails to tell faculty to check the web. Public Education section seems to focus on Marine Quest. Need to address other faculty outreach initiatives. Trish liked all crosscutting comments and provided hard copy of recommended changes/corrections. Dick liked Post-doc crosscutting issues: no answers, but good issues. Dan stated that Post-doc oversight/guidelines need to be developed. Ron stated that we need to define the roles of Research Faculty, Graduate Faculty (2 tiers?), Post-docs. o HR issue: classification o Affects benefits/health care o Need to show them the Faculty Handbook and UNCW Policies A general discussion ensued regarding Post-docs as “Research Assistants” o Salary & benefit protections o Additional assignments would benefit depts.. and individual Martin raised the issue of core facilities. Need to address different levels of use. Some facilities not included. Need to define those which would get user fees. Two global goals not addressed: Tech Transfer & Development/Advancement o University policy on Tech Transfer is under development. New position at UNCW for Research will have oversight of Tech Transfer for UNCW. Very important for UNCW. Patents and copyrights issues are issues to be addressed after basic policies are defined. o Motion: Need copy of AAI Pharma/UNCW Draft Document. (Dan will seek.) Dan mentioned that Alex Bocconcelli resigned (May 16th is last day), and Ron Moore (Seawater Systems Group) is taking a 1-year leave of absence. Dan Aspenleiter is serving as Acting Director of Marine Operations and Dennis Ihnat is serving as Acting Director of Fixed Operations CMS Internal Advisory Committee Summary – 5/15/02 - Page 3 Need Emergency POC list for problems at CMS Comments on Strategic Plan by e-mail by COB next Friday (10 days from now) There will be no more IAC Meetings until Fall
