Want to develop a graduate student fellowship and the Planet Ocean Seminar Series. Would like to work with IAC. Groundbreaking possible for this fall (October, November, December) dependent upon when bids are accepted, etc. Wrightsville Beach CMSR is on the market and awaiting offers better than $3.1 million According to Ron Core, building will start here regardless of the sale of WB CMSR Any proceeds of the sale of WB CMSR will come back to CMS Photos of new outdoor storage building Goal is to have 6 more so that research space inside can be utilized All are brick and hurricane “proof” and have A/C, heat, dehumidifiers. The University Of North Carolina At Wilmington CENTER FOR MARINE SCIENCE CMS Internal Advisory Committee Summary – August 31, 2005 – Page 3 Discussion Item: Core Resources initiatives (Dr. Merritt) Reviewed handout outlining the core committees and their job duties. Some committees looking for new chairs - review and make any corrections. #11 - evolving group. Goal is to ensure that all core resources are enhancing opportunities for students and faculty. Would like for these to “pay for themselves” (Baden) All are entitled to use core facilities but a faculty member is needed to be in charge, staff to do the work, better records kept of who is using the core, escheduling, and possible reassessment of boat fees due to increased fuel prices. Discussion Item: Space (Dr. Baden) There is NO empty space at CMS All rooms, offices, labs, storage are at max capacity and there are new hires that do not have space. New building is needed before any major moves can be made (earliest January ’07) Faculty need to alert necessary party in advance of new hires. Discussion Item: Academic updates: Dr. Willey—Graduate Masters in Marine Science Program still successful 33 current students (6 new this fall), 38 total graduates $250 cash awards to each of 3 outstanding TAs and 1 scholastic achievement New handbook and web updates Health insurance continues to be a problem hindering whether or not students are allowed to go out on the boats for research if they are not insured.
