Dec. 1, 2015 – John Gratto and Michael Kelly, faculty in Educational Leadership program, published "Developing a
Survey to Determine Student Perceptions of Readiness at the Beginning of an Educational Leadership Program," NCPEA
International Journal of Educational Leadership Preparation 10.2 (November 2015): 23-35.
Katherine Ulrich and Jesse Wilkins, faculty in Math Education program, published "A Written Instrument for Assessing
Students' Units Coordination Structures," Journal of Mathematics Education 10.2 (2015): 111-36, with Andy Norton, Nathan
Phillips, Tessa Anwyll, and Steve Boyce.
Claire Robbins, Assistant Professor, Higher Education, has been named an Emerging Scholar Designee by ACPA - College
Student Educators International, a leading international professional association for college educators. This award "supports,
encourages, and honors early-career individuals who are emerging as contributors to student affairs and higher education
scholarship and who are pursuing research initiatives congruent with the mission, interests, and strategic goals of ACPA[1]".
As an Emerging Scholar Designee from 2016-2018, Dr. Robbins will receive a $3,000 grant to support a qualitative study of how
race becomes salient to doctoral students in education. She will also serve as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of College
Student Development, create a video about her research to be shared internationally, and co-plan a conference symposium in
partnership with ACPA's Senior Scholars.
Amber, Dortch, a doctoral student in Educational Leadership program in School of Education won National Milken Educator

Carol Mullen, Professor in Educational Leadership program, published a new book titled "Education Policy Perils: Tackling the
Tough Issues" by Routledge. Congratulations, Carol!
Amy Price, Azano, Assistant Professor in Teaching and Learning, published "Addressing the Rural Context in Literacies
Research: A Call to Action," Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy 59.3 (2015): 267-69; and the following books, both with
Tracy Missett and Carol Callahan: Poetry and Fairy Tales: Language Arts Units for Gifted Students in Grade 3 (Waco, TX:
Prufrock Press, 2015) and Research and Rhetoric: Language Arts Units for Gifted Students in Grade 5 (Waco, TX: Prufrock
Press, 2015). In addition, Azano, as Principal Investigator, received the 2016 SEED Award for Research Development from the
Virginia Tech Center for Autism Research to fund the project titled "Development of an Evidence-based Program for
Competitive Employment of Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder." Co-PIs on the project are Jeremy Ernst, School of
Education/Office of Educational Research and Outreach, as well as Angela Scarpa and Susan White, both in Psychology.
Aaron Johnson, a doctoral student in Social Foundation program , presented "How is Citizenship Represented in Theory and
Research in Social Education? A Content and Discourse Analysis" at the College and University Faculty Assembly of the
National Council for the Social Studies, which took place November 11-13 in New Orleans, LA. In addition, Johnson presented
"New Digital Technologies and Local History: Making the Past Visible" at the annual conference of the Virginia Council for the
Social Studies, which was held October 16-17 in Norfolk, VA. The other authors of the presentation were: faculty members
David Cline, History, and David Hicks, School of Education/Teaching and Learning, Rosemary Zlokas, a master's student in
History, as well as Douglas Bowman, Kelly McPherson, Todd Ogle, and Gurjot Singh.
Brett Jones, Professor in Educational Psychology, gave the keynote presentation titled "Creating Motivating Learning
Environments for Clients" at the seventh Annual Conference for CETCLEVELAND (Cognitive Enhancement Therapy) Trainers,
Coaches, and Coaches in Training, held October 22-23 in Cleveland, OH.
Trevor Stewart, Assistant Profession in Teaching and Learning, published "Inquiry, Experience, and Exploration: Rebooting the
Research Project and Making Connections beyond the English Classroom," Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher
Education 4.2 (2015): 56-72, with Jeff Goodman.

Jeremy Ernst is being recognized on the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation homepage[3] as the Scholar
of the Week for the week of November 16 through November 20. Congratulations, Jeremy!
Barbara Lockee, professor in Instructional Design and Technology received an award from the Association for Educational
Communications and Technology (AECT). At the recent national meeting, she was presented with the AECT Annual
Achievement Award for the AECT Legends and Legacies Project. Congratulations, Barbara!
Dr. Gerard Lawson, EDCO and Dr. Kami Patrizio
, EDEL have recently been awarded a $914,000 research grant from the
National Institute of Justice. The grant, entitled "A Multiple Perspectives Analysis of the Influences on the School to Prison
Pipeline in Virginia", will rely on school climate, safety, threat assessment, and crime data from Virginia to determine factors
influencing juvenile involvement in the criminal justice system. Read more[4]
Through a interdisciplinary NSF CyberLearning Exploratory Grant, History and Social Science Education faculty (David Hicks)
and graduate students alongside colleagues in TLOS, the Department of History, and Computer Science have worked closely
with Montgomery County Public Schools, the Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association and the nonprofit Christiansburg
Institute Inc. to develop a mobile augmented reality app called CI Spy. Read more[5]
