Program Overview
This 14-day program will help you to comparatively answer the
questions of “how and why” individuals in a Blue Zone live to 100 years
and beyond. You will examine the healthy lifestyles, purpose of life,
and happiness strategies in Ikaria, Greece, and personally apply these
longevity lessons to convert your current Danger Zone into a Blue Zone.
It is our hope that your renewed spirit will invoke the “pass-it-forward”
rippling effect to influence your family, friends, and other citizens within
your community. The primary aim of your visit will be to understand
the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical, and social dimensions of
wellness within the Greece Blue Zone.
Academics
EXS 494: From Danger Zone to Blue Zone - Northern Ikaria (3 credits)
REC 494: From Danger Zone to Blue Zone - Southern Ikaria (3 credits)
These courses are designed to facilitate your understanding of the
lifestyles and mindset of people in the Blue Zones, where the most
Centenarians and Super Centenarians live. Once the theoretical
considerations are learned, students are encouraged to apply the
knowledge and longevity lessons from the Ikarian Blue Zone to practical
applications back in the United States.
Program Activities and Features
When in Ikaria, you will seek and interview older adults, Centenarians,
and/or Super Centenarians to link theory with practice. You will also
experience Greek culture and food, delve into the hot thermal springs
with purported healing qualities, encounter the dramatic rocky cliffs and
crystal clear water, and visit a winery, honey house, and hospital. You
will experience rich histories and traditions that span over thousands
of years. Housing is included, and you have the opportunity to travel to
surrounding areas before and/or after the program as desired.
