The Planet Ocean Seminar Series The Planet Ocean Seminar Series offers an opportunity for the greater Wilmington community to benefit directly from the topics of information available to the Center. The Planet Ocean Seminar Series is free and open to the public. The seminar is held in the main auditorium at the UNCW Center for Marine Science, 5600 Marvin K. Moss Lane. Southeastern North Carolina Watersheds: Environmental Status, Impact and Trends with Dr. Michael Mallin and Dr. James Merritt UNCW Center for Marine Science e’ve all noticed the headlines. W Millions of gallons of untreated sewage have spilled into local waterways and tributaries in recent months. To protect the health of our community and our oceans, it is crucial that we develop a better understanding of man’s impact on the environment. For our first seminar of the 2006-07 season, Dr. Michael Mallin will focus on local water quality initiatives. Dr. James Merritt will offer a historic overview of this timely topic. D r. Mallin is widely respected for his study of urban pollution and land use and their affect on the environment. He was instrumental in establishing the Lower Cape Fear River Program and serves as research coordinator for this organization, which monitors water quality in eastern North Carolina. Dr. Mallin also directs the New Hanover e join Pleas County Tidal Creeks Program and the Wilmington Watersheds Program. He is a Research Professor at the UNCW Center for Marine Science with a Ph.D. in Marine and Estuarine Ecology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. E ven in retirement, Dr. James Merritt maintains an active role in the Lower Cape Fear River Program. He helped to develop the concept of this program, along with the Tidal Creeks Program and others, and facilitated funding and implementation of these organizations. Dr. Merritt is a former Professor and Director of the UNCW Center for Marine Science.
