I am nominating Mark Grover for the 2011 Award for Excellence in the area of
Innovation. As Mark’s supervisor, I call on him to complete many projects. Mark not only accepts each and every one enthusiastically, but he consistently comes up with ways to complete them better than originally envisioned. Mark has become a selfless creator, designing innovative solutions for the good of UNCW.
Mark introduced a new technology designed and provided for free by Microsoft that now allows us to create a single configuration and deploy it to any number of
the systems that we support throughout the university, greatly simplifying our deployment. The end result sounds simple, but the process to get there was anything but! Mark had to build this environment from the ground up and did so by researching new technologies, learning industry best practices, and finding out what other institutions were doing while keeping the UNCW environment and current budget situation in mind.
Mark’s creativity and innovation made the Microsoft System Center Configuration manager project a success as well. Mark has studied “everything SCCM” and comes up with ways to do the current job easier and faster, which is a strategic asset to the university, especially in the current economic state. This new method will save countless hours of technician time and enhance the client experience as they don’t have to wait for a consultant to visit their computer. Mark has been able to develop a “touchless” method that automates everything in that process which means it can be run at the end of the day and be ready in the morning. Although my examples have only touched the surface of the ingenuity and innovation Mark has contributed to UNCW, I hope that you agree that he deserves the Award for
Excellence in Innovation. Mark constantly finds better ways to do things, the result of which are decreases in personnel hours and improved client satisfaction. I
have no doubt that this innovation will continue to benefit UNCW for years to come.
