Information Management for Business MSci
In close conjunction with the largest and most
well-known companies in the IT, banking and
finance, consulting and consumer goods
industries, we have created this four-year
degree, with a unique balance of IT,
management, and business, which specifically
aims to ensure our graduates have the tools
they need to excel in, and lead, the industries of
the future.
Degree summary
•
Developed in close collaboration with companies including British
Airways, BT, Computer Associates, Ford, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Morgan
Stanley, Aviva (formerly Norwich Union) and Unilever.
•
The programme provides the highest quality management and
technology education and a deep insight into the management issues
faced by technology-intensive organisations.
•
The programme links cutting-edge technology to innovative business
practices. There is a clear and direct relationship between what is
taught and learned and what is demanded by industry and
commerce.
•
The degree is endorsed by e-skills UK and licensed by the UK
Commission for Employment and Skills which is funded by the
Department for Business, Innovation & Skills.
The purpose of the first year is to provide you with the best possible
grounding in information technology, leadership and management. This
then serves as a foundation for the development of professional skills,
knowledge, understanding and expertise throughout the rest of the
programme.
The second year builds on your knowledge, to ensure that when you
conduct your third-year studies and project dissertation, you are in the
best possible position both to gain high marks in your degree, and to
have acquired skills and expertise of value to the kinds of employers with
whom we work.
Before the start of the third year you will be expected to identify a specific
area for your project dissertation. This is normally conducted through
working in close conjunction with one or more of the employers. The
fourth year allows for further study with advanced-level courses and a
group/individual project.
Your learning
Teaching and learning is conducted through lectures, seminars, case
studies and practicals; and there is a substantial and ever-developing
virtual learning environment in which you will be expected to participate
fully. Extensive background reading and literature research are required
throughout the programme. You will attend special sessions, guest
lectures, and regular tutorials with the Programme Director.
In order to progress from one year to the next, you will need to pass all
courses taken. These are examined through a combination of assessed
coursework and written examinations. Examinations take place at the end
of each academic year.
Your career
The programme will provide you with many skills, including: a solid core
of business, project management and team working skills; greater depth
and breadth of technical skills; and the foundation of excellent leadership,
professional, personal and inter-personal skills to enable effective
communication at all levels within an organisation.
The leadership, professional, technical and personal expertise developed
during your degree will provide you with many employment and study
options when you graduate. Our close contacts with employers will give
rise to openings for graduates, and many graduates will have the
opportunity to develop into both technology and management roles at an
early stage of their career.
During the programme of study, many opportunities for work in
companies - including internships - will be available. You may also wish
to consider postgraduate study in computer and information science and
technology, as well as more specialist management and business
programmes.
The first cohort of students admitted to the Information Management for
Business MSci will graduate in 2014. Therefore no information about their
