New Graduate Student Checklist (2010-2011)
Orientation Process – Please refer to your admission letter regarding information on what to do when you arrive at
the University, and complete the below checklist as soon as possible.
You will receive a copy of the Pharmacy and Nutrition Graduate Student Guide at the College Graduate Student
Orientation on September 10th, 2010. (The guide is also available online at:
www.usask.ca/pharmacy-nutrition/curgraduatestudents/guidelines/index.php.) All students are expected to
become familiar with the guide.
Activity Description
1
Go to the College of Graduate Studies and Research (CGSR) if required. Please take any
admission documents as indicated in your letter of admission to CGSR (Rm C180 Administration
Building).

E-mail Account – Obtain an NSID (Network Services Identification) and email account from
Information Technology Services by taking your Letter of Admission to 70 Arts Bldg., or
contacting help.desk@usask.ca . CGSR and the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition will use this
email address only for correspondence. Your NSID will give you access to PAWS (Personalized
Access to Web Services), which contains web-based tools, including e-mail, calendar and groups,
and gives access to information and services such as registration, transcripts, grades, library
tools (including RefWorks), etc.

Meet with your Supervisor – Find out what additional courses you need to register in, what keys
you will need (eg, specific labs, etc.) and other information. Your supervisor will give you a tour
of the College, pointing out the Graduate Student Lounge, notice boards & displays, meeting
rooms, laboratories and equipment, College Stores, other College facilities and the College
Office.

Visit the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition Office - Your supervisor will take you to the College
Office to do the following:
• Meet Ms. Jackie Huck, Secretary to the Dean (Rm 116.5, 966-6328), to complete any necessary
administrative forms, including information for scholarship or assistantship payments if
applicable to you, and to arrange for keys for your work area(s).
• Meet the Dean, Associate Deans and College Office Staff.
• Location of your mail slot (please check your mail slot regularly) and how to send
mail and courier packages.
• Location of printing and laundry drop-off points and turn-around times.
• Location and use of the fax machine.
• Where to obtain office supplies and record the items taken.
• Where to find student travel insurance, travel expense and record of absence forms.
• How to be reimbursed from petty cash.
• How to book rooms for meetings, College media equipment and media services.
• Location of College photocopier.

Arrange for a Desk Space – Please contact Angela Bergerman (visit room 122, and/or email
angela.bergerman@usask.ca) to be assigned a desk in the Graduate Student Office (Rm.
330/330.1) or other location.


Enroll in the following required courses online using PAWS (Personalized Access to Web
Services):
i.
GSR 960 (Introduction to Ethics and Integrity) – a required online course for all graduate
students
ii.
PHAR or NUTR 994 (M.Sc. Research) or PHAR or NUTR 996 (Ph.D. Research) in every
Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer term.
iii.
PHAR or NUTR 990 (Seminar) in every Fall and Winter term.
iv.
Depending on your research project, you may also be required to take GSR 961 (Ethics
and Integrity in Human Research) or GSR 962 (Ethics and Integrity in Animal Research).
v. Note: Other courses will be required for your program, as determined with your
Supervisor/Advisory Committee.

Safety and Environmental Protection: You will be required to complete one or more non-credit
‘safety’ courses, such as Biosafety, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Hazardous Waste
Management, etc. See http://www.usask.ca/dhse/trainingcourses/index.php for more
information and to register. Please arrange with your Supervisor to receive a copy of the Job
Safety Assessment or Standard Operating Procedures.

Animal Handling Courses - Depending on your research project, you may be required to take
GSR 961 (Ethics and Integrity in Human Research) or GSR 962 (Ethics and Integrity in Animal
Research). Discuss with your supervisor which courses may be necessary/beneficial for you to
take. To register, contact Colleen Myers, University Committee on Animal Care and Supply
Secretary (colleen.myers@usask.ca, phone 966-4126).

Orientation to Core Equipment Facilities – Please contact Dorota Rogowski at (306) 220-9205 or
email dorota.rogowski@.usask.ca for an orientation if you will be utilizing the Core Equipment
Facility, Tissue Culture or Animal Surgery.

Campus I.D. Card – once you have registered, go to the Campus ID Office located in the Main
bookstore, Marquis Hall, to obtain a campus identification card.
NOTE: From August 9 – September 17, 2010, ID Card Office will be located in Rm 280 Administration Bldg

Website Student Profile Information – Have your photo taken by the College (contact Angela
Bergerman - Rm. 122; email angela.bergerman@usask.ca ) and complete the Graduate Student
Biography Form available online at: www.usask.ca/pharmacynutrition/curgraduatestudents/checklist_students.php. Please submit to Angela Bergerman.

Computer Support – Become familiar with the Computing Learning and Resources Centre
(Rm.112 THORV) This is a dedicated computer room for use of Pharmacy and Nutrition
undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, there is a computer station in 330/330.1 for
general use. Please see the Information Technology Services Student Guide at the following web
