Admissions Requirements:
 Application Deadlines
o February, May and August
o Dates are posted on the website
o All students start in fall
 2.5 UNCW GPA for current UNCW students
 All transfer students have a 2.5 GPA
 45 Earned College Credits
 Declare Pre-Social Work major
 Narrative
 Collateral Courses* - must pass courses
o BIO 105 (BIO 160 or BIO 201, also)
o PLS 101
o SOC 105
o PSY 105
*NOTE: It is highly recommended that students complete
the collateral courses prior to starting the BSW core courses
in the fall semester of their junior year. If they have not
completed them, they should do so during the first year of
the BSW program. Students must also find time to complete
missing University Studies courses while progressing through
BSW requirements (may require summer).

Senior Year
 Try not to take other courses, Field Practicum is
intense and it is difficult to schedule courses
**NOTE: Any student should be able to register for first
semester BSW core courses. If those courses are full, they
can contact Catey Miller for an override. Students need to
complete an application for the major. If they have not, they
are expected to by the next deadline. Has not reached cap of
100 students.

What potential BSW students/advisors need to
know…
 Freedom to work in a variety of areas
o Schools, mental health, hospitals,
childcare, homelessness, etc…
 Social Work is practice based, considered a
professional academic degree with the ability
to get licensed (unlike psychology and
sociology)
 Many students minor in Psychology
 SWK covers 2 of each competency, so
students will need 1 (WI) and 1 (IL)
 Different course offerings each semester for
the SWK elective (some online – see 3rd page
for list)
 Cohort model so students start in the fall
 SWK 235 – feeder course (open to all),
recommended to be taken as early as possible
 SWK 320 & 321 require 25 hour
service-learning project – chosen from a list
 SWK 496 & 497 = Field Practicum – class is
once a week – between 16-18 hours per week
 BSW fulfill Human Behavior cluster but
student MUST declare it
 Child Welfare/Education Collaborative - for
students interested in working in public child
welfare – Competitive Process
o Need electives 311 & 312 for DSS
o Angie Vandenberg is the contact
 School Social Work Certification – for students
interested in applying for certification as a
School Social Worker in NC
o Must enroll in SWK 418 fall semester of
senior year AND undertake a school
field placement in public school setting
Why a student would not be accepted to BSW…
 Unresolved serious traumatic experience that
would limit their ability to support others
 Criminal Record, esp. violence-related crime
(does not disqualify them but does have an
impact)
 Not meeting the GPA requirement
 Inability to write properly
o Writing is a critical skill in the field
How a BSW student could be removed from the
program…
 Fall below the required 2.5 UNCW GPA
 C – in a BSW major course
o Have option to repeat the course once
but if they do not get a C or better,
could be removed from the program
