Surcharge Calculation Changes (coming in Fall 2014)
The state’s tuition surcharge calculation process is scheduled to change beginning in Fall 2014. UNCW
currently excludes attempted hours that have been withdrawn. This affects both W and WF grades. Starting
in Fall 2014, a grade of W and WF will be included in the attempted hour counts used in determining whether
a student will receive a tuition surcharge. This is a result of more stringent procedures provided from UNC
General Administration (Policy Manual Change 400.1.5[R], adopted 4/29/2013).
This change will likely result in more tuition waiver requests. If a student demonstrates that any of the
following have substantially interrupted their pursuit of degree, a waiver can be submitted.
Approved Waiver Circumstances (requires documentation)
-Military service obligation
-Serious medical debilitation
-Short-term or long-term disability
-Other extraordinary hardship
