MSSL's Director, Professor Alan Smith was there to take part in the opening and also to be present at UCL's first degree ceremony abroad. The MSSL presence will augment the existing UCL School of Energy and Resources (who's students graduated) and the UCL International Energy Policy Institute. MSSL in Australia will focus on both providing engineering -1- management training and education and also work with Australian industry and academia in the development of technology for both space and terrestrial applications. Appointments Andrew Coates has been appointed to the STFC Astronomy Grants Panel. Professor Smith said, “the development of space technology requires many skills in science, engineering and management. We plan to make our expertise in these areas available to Australian academic and industry sectors through education, training and collaborative R&D programmes. I see many interesting possibilities for MSSL in Australia and have been encouraged by the level of interest from researchers who are willing to collaborate. There have also been positive discussions with a variety of levels of government on the prospects for extensions into a range of sectors." Visitors Jared Leisner from the University of Iowa visited the Planetary Science group from 26-30 Sept. Teaching We have 21 students enrolled in our Master of Science Programme in Space Science and Engineering for the session 2011-12; they visited MSSL on 11 November, together with a few Physics and Astronomy undergraduates. Grants and Contracts This new venture represents the culmination of two of Professor Smith’s earlier trips to Adelaide over the last year and several visits to MSSL by Australian researchers and group leaders.
