Course Description:
Health coaching is an emerging profession and a mainstream approach to adapt to the changes initiated by the
Affordable Care Act (ACA). The role of a health coach is imperative in this shift to a collaborative and patientcentered health care approach. It involves helping patients gain the knowledge, skills, tools and self-efficacy to
discover their own solutions and achieve their self-identified goals for healthier outcomes.
Our three day training will focus on the spirit, foundational skills and tools needed for coaching, as well as a
framework for the coaching relationship. We will facilitate a mindset shift from a directive communication style to
a guiding style with an emphasis on the patient’s own needs and desires. This interactive training will include lots
of hands-on practice and is specifically designed to prepare participants to earn a certificate as a Health Coach*.
*Additional requirements to receive the certificate as a Health Coach include an online exam, buddy coaching, coach notes
and a case study as well as an additional fee.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this live educational activity,
participants should be able to:
Evaluate the importance of a health coach’s role
within a clinical practice setting and working in care
teams
Apply concepts in behavioral theory to guide clients
toward behavior change and increased self-efficacy
through mock health coaching simulations
Demonstrate the health coach framework process
through simulated coach practice sessions
Exhibit understanding of ethical standards and the
scope of practice of coaching
