Notes on Photography Collection: Winter of 1997, Nepal These photographs were made during my 2- month visit in Nepal. From mid-January to mid-March 1997, I was part of an Oregon State University team that made exchange visits with women scholars in Nepal from 1995 through 1997. The program was sponsored by the office of Women in Development at OSU through a grant from the US Information Agency, primarily as a people-to-people program. The photographic collection begins with 2 Google maps of Kathmandu in its valley and Pokhara, the two cities I visited. Note that maps and captions occasionally have different spellings. Not to worry, as both the language and script of English differ from many of the languages used in Nepal. The oval Kathmandu valley, about 19 km north-south and 24 km east-west, is believed to have been a Pleistocene lake drained in the Pleistocene, leaving a valley with rich soil at a quite comfortable 1300+ km altitude. Thus, it attracted several waves of settlers when the weather improved during the Holocene. The Pokhara area is a center for tourism at a slightly lower altitude. As a medieval city that grew into the modern era, Kathmandu has both districts and streets. Thus Bagbazar is both a street and district. Major cities within the valley include Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur that once were warring kingdoms. The national university is named Tribhuvan after a former head of state. It has several campuses including Padmakanya Campus on Bagbazar and caters to female students. I was affiliated with the Home Science department, which showed me many kindnesses, and I was treated warmly by the department representing Nepal’s history, archaeology and culture. I very much enjoyed a 2-day tour with that group’s seniors, faculty, and affiliated archaeologists. Among Kathmandu districts named on several slides are Durbar Marg, a very old part of the city, and Thamel, a tourist district. Like many other religious parks in Nepal, Swayambhunath has both Hindu and Buddhist shrines. Two other villages portrayed in these pictures are Dhulikhel and Chungunarayan, and with these are rural scenes of the valley outside Kathmandu. My pictures from the Pokhara visit include some of beautiful Lake Phewa and the nearby high point, Sarangkot, which offers spectacular views. I made these photographs using 35 mm slides and film. Don Alan Hall digitized the slides and negatives and prepared them for the web. I enjoyed the adventure, education, and friendships, and I am grateful to the OSU library for making it possible for me, at long last, to share them. I continue to be gratified by how these images transport me back to memorable visits with dear people. Enjoy!
