Obstacles: Financial, Academic, & Social

 In this population, lower levels of academic and social integration are inextricably linked to problems with finances and financial aid (Engle & Tinto, 2008)

 FG and LI students are less likely to be engaged in the academic and social experiences that foster success in college

 studying in groups, interacting with faculty and other students

 participating in extracurricular activities, using support services

 Rising tuition costs mean eligible students have to work longer hours to pay for school. More time at work means less time available to study and less time to conduct independent research.

Obstacles for Winthrop Students

 WU students eligible for TRiO programs have over 3x as much unmet need as non-eligible students (TRiO SSS proposal 2015).

 Obstacles to/in grad school for recent grads are often not academic
