INTRODUCTION/RATIONALE
In today’s world which has become a global village, translation acts as a socio-cultural
bridge. It is an important tool for imparting knowledge pertaining to any field and
discipline. Translation Studies is intended to give a boost to the consolidation of national
and international integration and ultimately bring unity in a context of diversity. This
programme has been designed with a view to providing students with knowledge on both
the theoretical and practical aspects of translation. The languages involved in this
programme of study are English and Hindi.

OBJECTIVES
This programme will help open up new vistas for employment. Those already involved in
the field of translation will acquire more proficiency and dexterity. This programme
through translation will foster the use of the functional form of language within the
multilingual and multicultural contexts of Mauritius. It will develop in students the skills
to analyse, evaluate and vet translated texts and also boost up research in the field of
translation studies.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of an undergraduate degree with:

ASSESSMENT
All modules will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows unless
otherwise specified:

Assessment will be based on Written Examinations of a 3-hour duration
carrying 70% of total marks and Continuous Assessment carrying 30% of
total marks.
Continuous Assessment will be based on seminars/presentations/
assignments/class tests.
There is no level attached to modules, i.e. each module carries its credit value.
For a student to pass a module, an overall total of 40 % for combined
Continuous Assessment (CA) and Written Examination (WE) components
will be required, without minimum thresholds within the individual
Continuous Assessment and Written Examination components.

OUTLINE SYLLABUS
TRHN- 5101 – Theory and Techniques of Translation
This module will introduce students to the concept and meaning of translation, the
theories and techniques of translation, the concept of source language and target language
and the importance and relevance of translation. Providing a broad understanding of the
basic outline of Indian and Western history of translation and the varieties of translation,
it will also analyze the limitations and problems of translation including the issue of
untranslatability.
TRHN- 5102 - Fields of Translation
This module will focus on the importance of translation in various fields such as
administration, literature, media, finance, commerce, banking, insurance, tourism, law,
parliament, science and technology. Apprising students about the technique, problems
and possibilities of translating material from various fields, it will further consolidate
their knowledge and experience of translation. Emphasis will also be laid on the practice
of translation.
TRHN- 5103 - Language, Literature, Culture and Translation
Keeping in mind the strong interrelationship of language, literature and culture, this
module will expose learners to the challenges, limitations and strengths of translation.
Learners will be familiarized with various forms of language and styles, in specific social
and cultural contexts. They will be introduced to linguistic competency, language
proficiency; concepts of bilingualism and multilingualism, standardization and
modernization of language, language register, the relationship between linguistics,
sociolinguistics and translation. Establishing the relationship between culture and
translation, this module will emphasize the relevance of translation in this era of
globalization.
TRHN- 5201 - Public Relations, Mass Communication and Translation
In this module, the learner will study the meaning of public relations in its various forms
and the role of language in public relations. Through the translation of texts in mass
communication, the learner will be accustomed to some basic terminologies in the field,
and will further develop his translation technique/method.
This module will consider the meaning and forms of mass communication, types of mass
communication and the relation between mass communication and translation. The
student will be introduced to the language and style used in the field of advertising. The
challenges, possibilities of translating texts related to cinema/films and computer, the
techniques of proof-reading will also be looked into.

TRHN- 5202 - Practice of Translation
This module is entirely based on practical work. It is meant to acquaint the students with
skills of translation of creative writings, administrative texts and texts from the various
fields of media, literature, science and technology, commerce, banking, insurance,
tourism, education, religion, art and philosophy. Emphasis will also be laid on the process
of vetting and evaluation of translation.

ELECTIVES:
TRHN- 5203 – Tools of Translation
In this module the importance of the various tools of translation will be elucidated.
Emphasis will be laid on the use of appropriate usage/use of vocabulary and technical
terminology in the domain of translation. Students will also be apprised with the concept
of dictionary, lexicography and translation and computer translation.
TRHN- 5204 – Tourism and Translation
This module will provide students with knowledge regarding to the role and importance
of translation in the field of tourism. After giving an overview of tourism, types of
tourism, cultural heritage, role of tourism in national economy and employment this
module will focus on language used in tourism, especially in relation to tourist sites,
tourist guides and various situations in tourism. It will include an analysis of translated
texts and material pertaining to the tourist sector.

TRHN 5000: Dissertation/Project
1. (a) Translation of text (approximately 5000-6000 words) Hindi-English-Hindi
And
(b) Research essay on topic related to translation (approximately 5000 words)

2.
Dissertation on topic related to translation (approximately 10000-12000 words)
Or
3.
Translation of/from a book. ( approximately 15000 words) English-Hindi-English
Topics of dissertations, research essays and selection of text/book for project to be
finalized by the Department. The above will be finalized by the end of Semester II of
first year.
Assessment:
Translation and/or research: 80%
Viva-voce: 20 %
