Describe Goals for the next academic year.
Teaching: I am teaching fluid mechanics (PAPR 320), wood and pulping
technology (PAPR 350), and paper, society and the environment (PAPR 103) this
fall. PAPR 103 is a brand new course in the Paper Science department. My goal
is to provide a foundation based on required theory which I intend to reinforce
through several applied projects. Paper Science 103 is being offered as a hybrid
course. I participated in the 2005 Curricular Redesign program to receive
training on how to use the D2L software package on campus. I believe that
using this software will help students of all learning styles develop their
understanding of course materials.
During the spring semester, I will be teaching heat transfer, statistics, pulp and
paper laboratory methods, freshman forum and senior seminar. My goal is to
build upon the successes of last spring and incorporate more practical
application projects which relate to the pulp and paper industry. I also plan to
use D2L to help administer Paper Science 210.
Scholarship: I am currently involved with a collaborative research project with
the USDA Forest Products Laboratory and Integrated Paper Services. The
purpose of this project is to investigate measurement differences between fiber
length analyzers available on the market today. The initial findings of this
research were published and presented at the TAPPI Papermaking Conference in
Milwaukee last May. Based on the initial feedback from the industry, I
anticipate more work in this area to further explore the differences we identified
between the various instruments.
I received a UPDC grant to continue my research interests in oxygen
delignification. I am currently working with two undergraduate students to
produce data needed for a larger grant application. I am scheduled to present a
talk on my research as part of the Chemistry Department seminar series in
December. I plan to use the results of the initial study to prepare a larger
research grant.
The department received a grant to support Mid-State Technical College develop
a two year program for paper mill operators. I will be working with Mid-State to
develop teaching materials for their courses. I will also be assisting Mid-State to
set up a new pulp and paper laboratory required for teaching.
Service to:
College: I will serve on the CNR Curriculum/Appeals committee during
the 2005-2006 year. I served on this committee last year and I look
forward to serving on the committee this year especially in light of possible
major changes to the GDR structure on campus.
UWSP: I was elected to serve on Faculty Senate last spring. I look
forward to becoming more involved in and aware of university issues
through faculty senate.
Department: During the summer of 2005, I spent a significant amount of
time reviewing the existing laboratory facilities in the Paper Science
Department. Our goal is to maintain our facilities to the same degree as
industry to develop more contract research opportunities. We have been
very successful over the last year with projects both on the paper machine
and the testing laboratory. We will continue to pursue more contract
work to provide resources for the department and training opportunities
for our students.
I am currently serving as the student organization advisor for the
TAPPI/PIMA Student Chapter at UWSP. This organization promotes the
education and professional development of students as they prepare for a
career in the pulp and paper industry. As the advisor, I attend all
TAPPI/PIMA Student Chapter meetings and provide advice and assistance
as needed.
Industry: I am currently the Vice Chairman of the TAPPI Process and
Product Quality Division Council and Steering Committee. This division
within TAPPI is responsible for guiding the development and acceptance of
all standard test methods published by TAPPI. This division is very
important to the pulp and paper industry since most pulp and paper
products establish their value based on TAPPI test methods.
Within the Process and Product Quality Division, I was appointed to be
the TAPPI/ANSI representative to ISO. This position is responsible for
presenting and defending the official position of the United States to the
world on Chemical Property test methods for the pulp and paper industry.
This is a wonderful opportunity to work with pulp and paper experts
throughout the world. The position will require travel to meetings every
eighteen months. Much of this travel will be subsidized by TAPPI.
I also serve as a member on the physical properties and pulp properties
committees. It is vital to the industry that the test method committees not
allow one company to obtain a competitive advantage over others by
creating a test method which disadvantages others.
As Vice Chairman of the Process and Product Quality Division Council, I
represent the division on the TAPPI Papermakers Conference Planning
Committee. This committee is responsible for planning the TAPPI
Papermakers Conference which will be held in Chattanooga during May,
2006. The conference planning committee reviews and accepts all papers
which will be published and presented at the conference.
Since the paper industry is very prevalent in the state of Wisconsin, I also
serve as a member of the Lake States Local section of TAPPI. The Paper
Science Program is very committed to supporting Lake States programs.
We strongly encourage our students to attend TAPPI Lake States
conferences when possible because of their strong technical content and
networking opportunities.

Accomplishments related to goals:
Based on the student performance and feedback, I was able to get the students
actively involved in their course work. I think that the students really developed
a clear understanding of the course concepts through the various projects I
assigned last year. As with any projects, I also did some learning and found
ways to improve the projects for this year.

project is to investigate measurement differences between fiber length analyzers
available on the market today. This work involves myself, Bill Radue, and Matt
Schneider (senior in Paper Science). I anticipate submitting a paper for
publication at the beginning of the spring semester.
I am also in the process of preparing a UPDC grant to continue my research
interests in oxygen delignification. My goal is to get funding to establish

Service to College, UWSP, Stakeholders:
Goals for previous year:
College: I will serve on the CNR Curriculum/Appeals committee during
the 2004-2005 year. I look forward to learning the college and university
committee process during my first year which will lead to more
involvement during future years.
UWSP: I have not been appointed to serve on any university committees
to date. I look forward to providing service in this regard when the
opportunity arises.
Department: During the summer of 2004, I spent a significant amount of
time reviewing the existing laboratory facilities in the Paper Science
Department. Our goal is to maintain our facilities to the same degree as
industry to develop more contract research opportunities. Contract
research is a wonderful way to raise funds to maintain and improve our
laboratory facilities as well as provide our students an avenue to get
actual industry experience on campus.
I am currently serving as the student organization advisor for the
TAPPI/PIMA Student Chapter at UWSP. This organization promotes the

pulp and paper industry. As the advisor, I helped our TAPPI/PIMA
Student Chapter become an annually funded student group for the first
time. I also helped guide the students to secure funding from various
sources to attend the TAPPI Coating Conference last spring.
Industry: I served the Vice Chairman of the TAPPI Process and Product

TAPPI is responsible for guiding the development and acceptance of all
standard test methods published by TAPPI. This division is very
important to the pulp and paper industry since most pulp and paper
products establish their value based on TAPPI test methods.
My tenure as the chairman of the Chemical Properties Committee ended
in January, 2005. I reviewed and submitted over 10 chemical properties
test methods from 2003 – 2005 as chair of this committee.
I continued to serve as a member on the physical properties and pulp
properties committees. It is vital to the industry that the test method
committees not allow one company to obtain a competitive advantage over
others by creating a test method which disadvantages others.
As Vice Chairman of the Process and Product Quality Division Council, I
represent the division on the TAPPI Papermakers Conference Planning

Through my contacts I have been able to secure donations to help maintain our
laboratory facilities. During the 2004-2005 school year I helped procure a
donation of hardwood pulp from International Paper and a donation of a Kajaani
FS-200 Fiber Analyzer from Domtar Industries.

products establish their value based on TAPPI test methods.
I will attend an ISO meeting in Atlanta in November.
I also serve as a member on the physical properties and pulp properties

Teaching:
Goals for previous year:
I taught fluid mechanics (PAPR 320), wood and pulping technology (PAPR 350),
and paper, society and the environment (PAPR 103) last fall. This was the first
time through PAPR 103 and PAPR 350. My goal was to provide a foundation
based on required theory which I intended to reinforce through several applied
projects.
During the spring semester, I taught heat transfer (PAPR 326), statistics (PAPR
314), and pulp and paper laboratory methods (PAPR 210). My goal was to build
upon the successes of previous spring and incorporate more practical
application projects which relate to the pulp and paper industry.

Additional Accomplishments:
Scholarship:
Goals for previous year:
I am currently involved with a collaborative research project with the USDA
Forest Products Laboratory and Integrated Paper Services. The purpose of this
project is to investigate measurement differences between fiber length analyzers
available on the market today. The initial findings of this research were
published and presented at the TAPPI Papermaking Conference in Milwaukee
last May. Based on the initial feedback from the industry, I anticipate more
work in this area to further explore the differences we identified between the
various instruments.
Accomplishments related to goals:
The project with the Forest Product Lab and Integrated Paper Services, has come
to a conclusion. A few questions came out of the presentation during May of
2005 and we did more work to answer these questions. This work provided a
benefit to the industry to help paper companies understand how the new fiber
length analyzers on the market compare to older and now obsolete analyzers.
I received a UPDC grant to continue my research interests in oxygen
delignification. I completed the first round of work in this area with two
undergraduate students last year. The initial work has shown some promise,
but our bleaching facilities are not adequate. I presented a summary of my
work as part of the Chemistry Department seminar series in December, 2005. I
will need to redesign the mixing system on the Paper Science and Engineering
Department bleaching system or purchase a new one to continue this work.
Because Dr. Gerry Ring and I received a UW-System Applied Research grant, I
plan to focus my research efforts on this grant until it is finished before I return
to this project.
I worked with Mid-State Technical College to design their new pulp and paper
lab last year. This lab was installed during the summer of 2006. I will be
assisting Mid-State personnel this year to help get the equipment in their new
lab operational. As part of the grant requirements, I submitted a module
detailing course information to teach finishing and converting of paper products.
Service to College, UWSP, Stakeholders:
Goals for previous year:
College: I will serve on the CNR Curriculum/Appeals committee during
the 2005-2006 year.

College: The CNR Curriculum/Appeals Committee reviewed and forwarded
a significant number of new courses and course revisions last year.
UWSP: Faculty Senate reviewed and voted on a large number of issues
last year. The EL GDR Review Committee met several times last year and
we are continuing to work on a method to quantify student learning in EL
courses on campus. Serving on these committees has enabled me to meet
a large number of faculty members outside the CNR.
Department: We had a very successful year in the Paper Science &
Engineering Laboratories. I helped the department develop specific
operating conditions to produce speaker cone paper for Nuway Speaker
Products. I also filled in for Bill Radue during second semester when he
was out due to a family emergency. I worked with the PAPR 486 senior
class to produce recycled paper from the New York Times for use as art
paper in the Stevens Point School System. We are steadily building a base
of customers to consistently building a base of satisfied customers to help
support our department laboratories.
I am currently serving as the student organization advisor for the
TAPPI/PIMA Student Chapter at UWSP. This organization promotes the
education and professional development of students as they prepare for a
career in the pulp and paper industry. As the advisor, I attend all
TAPPI/PIMA Student Chapter meetings and provide advice and assistance
as needed.
I worked with the Student TAPPI/PIMA Charter at UWSP to help them
plan a trip to the TAPPI Papermaking Conference in Atlanta last April.
Through my network of contacts, I helped the students secure support
from TAPPI and Coca-Cola to help fund their trip. Student trips to TAPPI
national conferences are extremely valuable to help the students develop
industry contacts before they begin their careers.
Industry: I am currently the Chairman of the TAPPI Process and Product
Quality Division Council and Steering Committee. This division within
TAPPI is responsible for guiding the development and acceptance of all
standard test methods published by TAPPI. This division is very
important to the pulp and paper industry since most pulp and paper
products establish their value based on TAPPI test methods. As Chairman
of the division, I work with the Steering Committee to plan technical
conferences and committee meetings. I also have responsibility to recruit
new members for officer positions and administer division awards.
Within the Process and Product Quality Division, I was appointed to be
the TAPPI/ANSI representative to ISO. This position is responsible for
presenting and defending the official position of the United States to the
world on Chemical Property test methods for the pulp and paper industry.
During the past year, I reviewed several ISO test methods and
recommended the official United States position. I will be attending a
meeting in Atlanta this November to work with my counterparts
throughout the world on specific development projects.
Last year as Vice Chairman of the Process and Product Quality Division
Council, I represented the division on the TAPPI Papermakers Conference
Planning Committee. This committee was responsible for planning the

Accomplishments related to Administrative Goals
My primary goal was the revitalization of the student recruitment effort that had been
neglected in the past two years. Our new effort has led to a dramatic increase in high
quality students entering our freshman class. Scholarship applications have also been
revitalized, and the UWSP Paper Science Foundation is moving to its goal of 100%
funded tuition scholarship. Furthermore, the Department’s SCH has dramatically
increased since this activity for begun as seen in the graph below:
Working hand-in-hand with UWSP administrators, the paper industry (particularly the
Wisconsin Paper Counsel), and Wisconsin state legislators funding for our laboratory
manager position was secured.
3
Both Dr. Guay and Dr. Biasca have been actively pursuing research projects. Dr. Biasca’s
efforts have led to a notable achievement with recycling the New York Times on
Campus. Dr. Guay and I are continuing to seek funding for a research project that uses
fiber length distributions to blend a constant distribution final pulp stock.
A $60,000 NSF grant was obtained to assist Mid-State Technical College to establish the
National Network for Pulp and Paper Technology Training over the next two years.
Awards were sought and obtained for Karyn Biasca (Teaching excellence), Carl
Rasmussen (University Service Award), Michael Kocurek (Paper Industry International
Hall of Fame, 2005 inductee).

Accomplishments related to Administrative Goals
I served as chair on the Laboratory Manager search-and-screen committee. John Lazar was hired and is now
on staff.
I supervised and led the necessary activities to change the Department’s name form “Paper Science” to
“Paper Science and Engineering”.
I led the recruiting efforts with UWSP admissions, the PS&E faculty and the UWSP Paper Science
Foundation to improve where possible all recruiting efforts. Recruiting results are slowly improving. The
Department efforts in this area are continuing to improve and increase.
I worked on developing a “Paper Science Center” throughout the year. Initial efforts involved the proposal of
a biofuels/biorefinary minor through Centergy (Wisconsin Center for Economic Development, part of the
Wisconsin Innovation Network). These efforts have received a gratifyingly high level of support from
UWSP, the legislature and the business community and will continue.
Encouraged Dr. Karyn Biasca to become the department’s ABET accreditation coordinator. We recently
visited ABET’s annual meeting in Tampa, Fl to obtain training in the accreditation process.
I successfully encouraged Karyn Biasca to apply for promotion.
