General Education Committee Minutes, 4/11/12 Members present: E. Adams, J. DeBoer, J. Luckowski, J. Rabinovitch, D. Sloan, A. Sillars, N. White Members Absent: S. Caro, D. Klapmeier, E. Uchimoto Ex-Officio Members Present: E. Johnson Guest: S. Bradford, Dean McCusick The minutes from 3/28/12 were approved. Communication Items: Dean McCusick updated the Committee on the pending Phi Beta Kappa chapter. He is chair of the Steering Committee. He requests that the Committee help by making language more robust in the general education requirements. Business Items: The Social Science Subcommittee summarized the review. Two courses were not recommended for approval. BGMT 340, Management and Organizational Behavior would be acceptable if it did not have a prerequisite of junior status in the major. The majors fulfill the social science group with a required Economics course, so it seems the general education status is not required. In addition the form indicates the course is important for other majors, yet the prereq would indicate that it is restricted. GPHY 241, Montana does not meet the requirements of a social science course and it is not foundational. Chair DeBoer will communicate to the Department Chairs. The list appended was approved. The General Education Program needs to be more transparent for students. One improvement would be to make the links to the program in the catalog more visible. The next version of Academic Planner will have enhanced advising functionality. Out-of-state transfer students should be given the same options for satisfying general education as Montana transfer students. The current system is not equitable. Courses are assessed for equivalency, so students should be able to assess whether they would benefit from satisfying the MUS core (with the specifications outline in BOR Policy 301.10 for Montana students) or certifying that they completed the general education program from their previous institution. Another option would be to resurrect the old tier system. Camie will attempt to find this language. Chair DeBoer noted that most Community Colleges within the MUS system use the MUS Core. UM and Bozeman have much more complex general education programs. The committee discussed the possibility of a motion to take to ASCRC and the Faculty Senate. Possible language may include: Students transferring from any institution should have the same consideration as Montana students in terms of satisfying general education courses with the MUS core or certification of completion of general education from the sending institution.
