Graduate Council Meeting Minutes October 14, 2009 GBB 202, 12:10-1:00 p.m. Members Present: C. Anderson, R. Bolton, L. Frey, J. Hunt, N. Moisey, G. Quintero, C. VonReichert, C. Winkler Members Absent/Excused D. Erickson J. Hirstein, E. Hurd, M. McGuirl, Associate Provost Brown Ex-officio members Present: S. Ross The meeting was called to order at 12:15 p.m. The 9/30/09 minutes were amended and approved. Communication Endorsement of the Academic Strategic Plan was postponed at the Faculty Senate meeting last week. There has been much criticism of the document. ASCRC has formed a workgroup to make recommendations and suggests that the Council do the same especially with regard to the second initiative – Cultivate Learning and Discovery at the Graduate Level. Council members will review the draft for discussion next week. A department has asked about the process regarding transitioning graduate courses to common course number (CCN) rubrics. According to the Registrar graduate courses will be automatically transitioned to the CCN rubrics when departments complete the conversion process. These changes will not need to be reviewed by the Council unless course numbers and titles change. Business Items: The Social Science subcommittees consent agenda was approved (below). Several courses are pending follow-up. The Humanities subcommittee consent agenda was approved (below). Follow-up is pending on ART 502 and 599 and Media Arts 456. ART 436 UG was withdrawn. The subcommittee rejected the proposal for HC 496 UG, Independent Study for the following reasons: 1) HC does not have a graduate faculty, 2) departments with graduate programs and faculty should get the credit for graduate courses, 3) graduate credit isn’t given to undergraduates: even graduate students on provisional non-degree status must be admitted to the graduate school and that requires an undergraduate degree. The Council approved the rejection. The subcommittee also recommended that the UG status be removed from HC 495 UG. The Council agreed that the Dean of the Honors College should be informed of the rejection of HC 496 UG and the recommendation to remove the UG status from HC 495 UG and given the opportunity to discuss the issue with the Council. Chair Bolton will communicate to the Honors College Dean. The subcommittee also rejected the proposed Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies for the reasons listed below. Members were instructed to review the proposal for discussion next week. 1) The WGS undergraduate program is small and only offers an undergraduate minor 2) One of the two proposed core courses, HSTR 570 Seminar in U.S. Women’s History, cannot be offered every year because of constraints on History’s other offerings if the course were offered more often 3) There was no rationale provided for the grouping of diverse disciplines 4) One co-director who would be involved in admission to the program is an adjunct. 5) There was no mention as to how the certificate might be useful 6) There has been no consultation with other departments (at least not English, History or MCLL, all of which have faculty listed on the proposal as teaching courses that would be options for the certificate program). 7) Students, with approval of their home departments, would be allowed to apply credits both to their degree and the graduate certificate. 8) It risks delaying graduation because few programs have room for 12 credits of electives 9) numbers are bound to be low because of 8, and it would be a target for elimination in a few years 10) No rationale was provided for the need for such a program The meeting was adjourned at 1.02 p.m. Social Science Consent Agenda Anthropology ANTH 463 UG ANTH 553 Historic Preservation Seminar in Evolutionary Archaeology Environmental Studies EVST 430 UG Culture and Agriculture New course New course Change credits from 2 to 3, change to UG, change description Geography GPHY 535 GPHY 597 Social Work SW 545 SW 553 SW 588 SW 589 SW 593 Seminar in Water Resources Professional Paper New course New course Practice of Organizational Leadership Social Work Practice in the Field of Addictions Concentration Practicum I Concentration Practicum II Professional Portfolio Reduce credits from 4 to 3 New course Increase credits from 2 to 3 Increase credits from 2 to 3 Change repeatability Humanities Consent Agenda ART ART 340 UG Painting II: Contemporary Themes ART 351 UG Painting II: Special Topics ART 501 Graduate Critique Seminar ART 502 new course ART 504 Graduate Assistant Seminar/ Professional Development Pre-Candidacy ART 505 Graduate Studio Research: Art new course ART 515 ART 580 Graduate Research and Studio Processes: Photography Graduate Research and Studio Processes: Drawing Graduate Research and Studio Processes: Ceramics Graduate Research and Studio Processes: Printmaking Graduate Research and Studio process: Sculpture Graduate Research and Studio Processes: Painting Graduate Teaching Assistant Seminar change course title from Graduate Studio in Photography Change title from Graduate Studio/Drawing Change title from Graduate Studio/Ceramics Change title from Graduate Studio/Printmaking Change title from Graduate Studio/Sculpture Change title from Graduate Studio/Painting Delete ART 697 Terminal Project: Thesis Paper New course ART 699 Level I Terminal Project: Thesis Exhibition/Presentation MA, major in Theatre Level I MFA, major in Theatre Change title from Art Thesis, change credits from 6 to 3 Re-titling major from Drama to Theatre Re-titling major from Drama to ART 523 ART 529 ART 533 ART 535 ART 540 Change title from Painting II: The Figure; Modify descr, eliminate prereq Change title from Painting II; Modify descr Change credits from 1 to 2 new course Theatre Theatre THTR 406 UG THTR 420 UG THTR 421 UG Professional Technical Production Acting V: Studio Acting VI: Studio THTR 423 UG Professional Performance THTR 425 UG Acting VII: Studio THTR 426 UG Acting VIII: Company THTR 475 UG Directing II THTR 476 UG Directing III THTR 501 Introduction to Graduate Studies Renaming course, lowering credits, removing repeatability Renaming course, lowering credits, removing repeatability Renaming course, lowering credits THTR 521 Graduate Acting II New course THTR 532 THTR 538 New course New course THTR 575 Graduate Seminar in Dramaturgy Graduate Methods of Teaching Theatre Directing IV THTR 576 Directing V THTR 609 Graduate Design Project Renaming course, revising description Renaming course, revising description New course THTR 645 Graduate Design Seminar III New course THTR 646 Graduate Design Seminar IV New course THTR 675 Directing VI Renaming course, revising description ENFM 381 Studies in Film Change from UG to U ENFM 481 Advanced Studies in Film Change from UG to U New course Removing repeatability Removing repeatability, revising course description Renaming course, changing number of credits Renaming course, revising description, adding fee New course English Modern and Classical Languages - French Change title from Advanced Composition and Conversation, Change number from 408, change description.
