The purpose of DiGiorgio Student Union is to further the student development mission of Winthrop University by providing a variety of educational opportunities of an academic, social, or cultural nature outside of the classroom. Live Music hosts solo or duo acts, local and national groups and bands. Past events include: Violinist Damien Escobar, Singer/Songwriter Preston Leatherman, Rock Band the Strive Fine and Performing Arts Committee - These programmers are committed to exposing the Winthrop community to arts opportunities such as poetry, visual arts, dance, and theatre, including improvisation and comedy. Past events include: Drag WU Hosted by Spoken Word Artist J. Mase, Messy Twister, and Poetry Slams Lectures and Diversity Committee- These programmers sponsor speakers who address significant issues and present unique and innovative ideas, debates, and forums to educate and entertain. Students are exposed to cultural differences and traditions, in aims to open the dialogue on topics of diversity and promote multicultural understanding from both a domestic and global perspective. Past events include: Open Mic Night: Raise Your Voice, Awaking the Black Consciousness hosted by Spoke Word Artist Shane Romero, Dear White People Q&A, and Inspirational Card Writing Traditions and Special Events Committee- These programmers organize events which do not neatly fit within the existing committees, and provide a means for students to celebrate Winthrop’s unique spirit and culture at various campus-wide programs throughout the year. Past events include: Magician Norman Ng, Blind Speed Dating and Winthrop’s Last Comic Standing Daytime/Late-Night and Novelties Committee- These programmers sponsor creative, interactive, “homegrown,” or student featured programs during non-traditional event times, which target both residential and commuter students. In addition, this committee sponsors interactive novelties, allowing students to create fun and innovative trinkets to take home. Past events include: Pictures with Santa, Pajama Palooza, Cookie Bar, and Outdoor Movie’s EagleFlicks Committee- These programmers organize and manage events that are dedicated to providing various types of movies and films to the campus community. These movie options may include blockbuster and marquee films, documentaries, independent studio movies, drama, action, etc. This committee will also organize theme movie nights and create an experience centered around the movie. Past events include: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Life In A Day, and Selma. Promotions Committee- The promotions committee is a multifaceted committee that is responsible for creation of designs, publications, publicity, public relations and advertising for the DSU programming board. This committee consists of two 2 graphic designers, 2 social media personnel and 1-2 individuals responsible for public relations. This committee maintains the creation of visual media that can attract all audiences and enhance event attendance.
